I decided to got for a more original series 2 look, so I had a local upholstery shop redo the door panels and seats.

So they get you going and coming out here, which means you just gotta pay up! On the up side the state will buy it from you for $1000 if it fails SMOG, and crush it! Definitely not happening to my car.

The universal Cats were $650 installed at a shop, Magnaflow makes a bolt on set for a few hundred more, which is probably a better option from an aesthetics standpoint and I kind of wish I'd done it.

If I register my car from out of state, does it just have to pass the older emissions test standards that it passed in 1994? It will be disqualified for a waiver since the car is coming from out of state.

Down here in 'bama, there's no emission nor inspection. My exhaust looks like swiss cheese. Maybe I could keep renewing my license in 'bama!?

From what I understand it will have to pass CA SMOG for the year produced, but not all areas of the State require SMOG test, so it depends on where you live. My car is a 48-state, federal car and in 1990 when I brought it in to CA it was tested against the federal standards. Not sure when or why it changed but the test I passed a few months ago was against CA standards. As far as keeping it registered out of state, not sure I'd try that the CA rule is it has to be registered within 30 days of coming in state. I'm not sure how they figure that out, it may be when they ask you at the DMV how long you have had it in state. For a 1994 FD RX-7 I might spend the money to get it legal, the car is worth something if its in good shape. Not all smog shops will take on an RX-7, at least not a 1983 like mine I had to call around.

thanks! Do cali smog shops still cheat on emissions by reving to 4000 rpm and fooling the smog machine into reading 800 rpm?

Some states have gotten rid of emissions because the newer cars run so clean with all the computer controls.

Thank You, and I appreciate your on-line support during this journey.....I've got a ways to go on the car and I'm probably not going to ever get it perfect-but I'm Damn sure gonna try! I'd like to do an FC then an FD too, but not sure the Mrs. would go for it and I definitely don't have the garage space. Anyway here is one of my inspiration photos from when I first owned the car from 1985-1990. I'm looking for the OEM Mazda "Unleaded Fuel Only" sticker for the fuel door, any ideas on that?

Ya gotta love the "bra" how the car looked in 1987 when I first owned it.

The car looked great then as well!! The bra doesnt look bad on the car either. Its nice to see the other cars in the background of the photo such as the FC and the Corvette...and under that cover appears to be a Porsche 944! You were in good company then for sure!

I thought they also had the later style w/the Spanish underneath, but didn't see them. Maybe something for you to further investigate.

Thanks Banzai! I cannot find the sticker that it came with (English w/Spanish underneath), that seems to be the hard one to find. I may go for a generic at some point or just not worry about it.

I think the gas filler sticker was in English and French. I'll have to double check. Either way you may have to have that item reproduced as I'm not sure if those are available any longer from Mazda.

OK, English/French that's good to know and I really appreciate the picture, I didn't think to take a picture of mine before I had it repainted. Thank you both!

I have an 84 GSL and I was able to find OEM fuel pump on JC Whitney.
I am having issues with my 12A 4BBL carb as well. Are you doing a rebuild of the carb as well? If so I'd like to know how that goes. There are rebuild kits out there.
