frozenmoustache's '84 GS Build Thread

After this weekend, I believe that it's time to start a build thread, as the build has officially started.

Last week I picked up a 1984 RX7 for $1,300.

It was sold as not running and the clutch not working. Because I have no real timeline of when to get the car on the road, I figured I could pick this up and slowly work on it.

I pulled the fuel lines of the carb to see if there was a fuel pump/line/filter problem. And I discovered that all of those were working. (Sort of)

But the fuel looked like this. (Normal gas in Gatorade bottle)

So now it leads me to today. I can get the car running but only for short periods of time. It will not run without the choke being pulled. I put clean gas in the tank, and that's helping. I need my battery charged before I continue trying to start it.

I believe there may be an issue with the carb, I don't know how these ones work so I'm going to have to do some research before I try to rebuild it.

Clutch was fixed just by bleeding it. Although the slave cylinder is not it good shape. I bought a replacement to install at a later date.

I'm looking forward to wrenching on this. I haven't owned a rear wheel drive car, so that's my motivation to work on this.

This post is to keep record of all the small problems that come up, I will update them as I get to them

1. Not starting - ongoing problem. I believe carb issue. (Fuel pump is going as well, although doesn't need to be replaced as of yet.
2. Tach doesn't work. I haven't looked into this at all. I just know it doesn't move.
3. Rust inside wheel arches. Looks like the previous owner tried a patch, but that's rusty too. Will remove and fix accordingly.

For some reason you can't edit posts after about an hour. I don't really understand why, but its apparently meant to keep a record or something...

Oh, that's weird. It's something that I've done on all the other build threads that I've done. Basically some sort of index.

Oh well, nothing that can be done about it now.

Check your spark plugs and wires. Make sure the wires are going to the right plugs. That would cause the choke to need to be pulled out to run. Timing too.

Hello, I am having a similar problem-only get engine running with choke on. I am original owner of an 84 GSL 12A 4BBL and have kept my car in mint condition. I replaced all ignition components with new parts as well as fuel pump and filter. I suspect the carb has to be rebuilt but that is a large amount of work. I would like to know if you end up rebuilding yours and how that works out.
