Project - Mazda Factory Race Rx7 S1 (aka Daytona #7)

Hi All

Thought I'd finally share my project from Australia, on the factory built Rx7 race car replica, like the one raced in Daytona 1979 race. Using the MFR components found in the Rx7 Competition Preparation and Service manual. It been a long/hard/costly project so far, with many hours/days/years searching the web for parts.

Here are some shot of the cars being tested back in the day, on which my car will be painted with light and dark green striping.

https://img231.imageshack.us/img231/...bay424x600.jpg
https://img268.imageshack.us/img268/...out424x600.jpg

Those cars were powered by the MFR 12a PP engine and using all the MFR parts bin. The list of MFR parts is a long one.
Story so far, The Late Loen Prgomet started with my shell and install the new roll cage, rear control arm mounting to suit the longer MFR arms, drivers seat mount with cutting the floor (I'm a tall bastard), fuel tank and exhaust system. Once completed it was off to start the paint and panel.

Carrying out the trial fitt of the 14" SSR mk3 rims. Fronts are 8.5 and rear 11, will require new inner and outer rims spun up for the rear ones. The factory cars had 9"s on the front, but the 8.5 will done. (Save a few dollars where you can I guess).

NICE!!! Looking great!

Are the green stripes painted on? or are they vinyl?

Do you know the exact color of the stripes?

Frankenmazda 04-04-12 10:12 AM

Awesome build

Lots of work paying off nicely.

twinkletoes 04-04-12 10:22 AM

Very nice project! I have a few videos and pics from sevenstock of that #7 car. I always loved it and originally thought of replicating my car to it, but I passed.

Looking great! Keep it up!

GySgtFrank 04-04-12 10:29 AM

Very, Very nice, first class all the way. A project like this takes fanatical dedication. You'll definitely be a hit around the vintage racing events.

j9fd3s 04-04-12 11:12 AM

wow, i'm impressed! that car is my favorite, AND i've been lucky enough to see it at things like sevenstock, and the monterey historics.

i can tell you that you have the rear floor correct, currently the arms are in the outboard box section, although there are multiple holes.

Banzai 04-04-12 11:34 AM

Very cool. Nice to see a build with this kind of budget, quality and attention to detail. A true labor of love that makes absolutely no finanical sense, but pushes all the right buttons.

myfree7 04-04-12 05:15 PM

very nice car!!!!! deff looking forward to seeing the rest of the build

RX-7 Chris 04-05-12 11:11 AM

very impressive project

Thanks, I'll be painting the stripes on and using the Mazda colours of Cosmic Green (Dark) then Earth Green (Lighter).

Thanks Guys for the kind words, hope to get it off the spit over easter and start the painting of the strips and front spoiler install.

sa7 04-05-12 05:23 PM

Wow, awesome build so far. I would love to have some of those parts on my sa.

i was going to ask about the brake calipers. i wonder if they are originally from another car? i've done a little hunting and have turned up nothing that looks right.

one of the wheel bearings was easy, the other is a mystery part, where did you find the wheel hub/rotor? i'd imagine the rotor is some off the shelf bit too

Redliner223 04-06-12 11:16 AM

Where did you source out all of the MFR gear?

Here's a pic of the MFR Brake Duct and MFR Steering Box, has a ratio of 2.7 turns lock to lock. Standard is around 4 turns, make the steering heavy.

Started fitting up the later model 81-85 model front spoiler, as I was unable to find a genuine type to suit series 1 (78-80 model). Cut the bumper off the top of the spoiler (as it was a one piece) and some trimming of the sides. The front apron middle section of the genuine one had to be cut. Alittle more trial fitting required and slight mods.......but will look ok.

bad-ass approach to a bad-ass project! i love it.

lloyd12a 05-25-12 05:11 PM

Play around with front spoiler and think this the best position, bit more sharping and undercoat to come. Once I find some nutserts and button head bolts for the flares, fit them up, touch up and then flow coating the car. Then the strips painted on, job done. (body work that is)

Good to see it coming along. Can't wait to see it finished.

Redliner223 06-20-12 07:58 PM

Hey man I was wondering if there is a MFR header or something?
Also what will you be doing to the engine as far as internals, and intake?

Redliner223 06-20-12 08:54 PM

The reason why I ask is because I have some literature from 1978 and they discuss this particular car in there. Only problem is I had it brought to the states from japan, so it's all in Japanese.
If anyone knows Japanese and wants something to do I can send pdf's to have translated.

There are, but im unable to find any. I have made my own. As far as the engine, it will be MFR 12a. Using MFR end plates, MFR 12a Housings, MFR manifold, MFR Oil pump, MFR 12a Sump, MFR oil control springs, lightned rx7 rotors (unable to find new MFR one, but do have new MDR type to use with my next engine), carbon seals and a new e-shaft to MFR spec's. Running a 51mm IDA weber and factory style cold air box.

Check an eye out for the build updates.

lloyd12a 06-22-12 06:55 AM

Well the stripes are masked up, after around 10 hours, over a couple of days. Should have them painted by the weeks end, then a rub down with 2000 and flow coat. Plus i've just noticed the window door frame is blackened, so more painting to follow.......

On another note, ive just found out there are (were) MFR strut top #4352 34 390 and MFR wheel studs # 4352 37 165, both NLA anywhere........

Thanks lloyd for the reply. Do you have any pictures of what the MFR headers looked like?
I'm thinking about putting headers on my '79 and I want a classic race look to them.

I must ask where did you find that body kit?

I'm sorry I don't have a pic of the headers. I would say that they were heavy cast iron.
The body kit is a Australia "Group C" 81-85 kit.
