fb 12a rebuild and swap into a 79sa

Whats up guys, so I had some troubles with my fb. Besides the fact that its rusted out, got a broken tierod, other front suspension issues; i believe my engine is good. However i got screwed on the title, it was an idaho title and i couldnt afford the late fees that were appliciable before i even got the car. Long story short WA state patrol doesnt take too kindly to Idaho plates with no lights at dark (had a belt snap alternator wouldnt charge, was getting no power) and slapped me with the option of a 1000$ ticket or dont drive my car til its legit. The legal issues will cost me 400 alone, the rust repair is just plain not worth it, and im sure fixing the front suspension will be pretty expensive aswell. So i have decided to do my first rebuild and swap. A guy i know has an SA that has been stripped out. He wants 200. The tranny is there and from what i can tell its a nice car. Im gonna get a better look with an experienced buddy here in a few days, but im completely clueless here. Im gonna be honest guys, im 17. I dont really know cars that well. I have some basic knowledge, but my very good friend Chilton seems to be very good resource. What snags can i expect to run into during this swap? Can I use the SA tranny with my fb 12a and sell my fb tranny? With some work, i should be able to instal an fb rear bumper and install the black plastic fb piece where the license plate goes on the SA for more of an fb look? Im sure this is the beginning of my questions. Im doing this for my senior project in highschool. I am currently parting out my 82 and will be purchasing the SA soon. For now, i plan on keeping most things stock and just using an atkins rebuild kid. Hope to start pulling stuff from my engine in the next few days and seeing what all i can possibly use from my fb in the SA. I look forward to sharing this learning experience with you guys and hope to learn a lot from yall!

hey
this is lance sounds like a good project i dont know all the fine details of what you need to do the swap i think from what i have read you need the motor mounts from the FB body. I am sure someone will pipe up and correct me if wrong.
I have only owned my 79 a few months still getting to know it.
good luck

okay so, change of plans. instead of buying a stripped SA for 200, i picked up 2 other 82 rx7s for 700. one has a very clean body, nice interior, some sort of aftermarket exhaust, 2-1 headers, cherry bomb. its a gs. i believe it has low compression in one of the rotors cuz it makes a really horrible sound sometimes right when it starts and kinda stutters when you really get on the gas. the other is another solar gold gsl, which isnt running right now. i plan to take the lsd from rusty (the gold 82 in my first post) and swap it for the open diff in the black one.
i think i got a really killer deal on these cars. rusty sadly will be stripped of the engine and whatever else i decide i need and be taken to the scrap yard. sad way to go, but shes so rusted out shes not worth doing much but scrapping. im not quite sure of my plans as of yet, but i should have quite a bit of money after i sell parts and one of the complete shell/engines. and yes, i have 2 solar gold 82 gsl RX7s

So complete change of plans. I only got the black 82 GS. Its rattle canned flat-black. Found out the engine was rebuilt about 26xxx ago, although it was back in 97. Has some starting issues where i have to pump the gas to get it to turn over. I think it might have bad compression but the recent (is it really recent?) rebuild makes me wanna look at carb tuning first. Is 26xxx miles much on a rebuilt engine? The guy was using synthetic oil in it.. And there is some white gunk on the dipstick. It also blows smoke a little bit after redline.

Its also idling at about 1050-1100 again making me wanna look at the carb for the starting issues. Im gonna upgrade to 2gcdfis and eventually the transistor trick too and replace all the spark plugs and see if that makes a difference. The carb is a stripped nikki and i dont think the guy sealed off all the vac stuff right. Rats nest is removed but again doesnt look like a very good job. All the vac hoses are plugged with random screws and bolts. The engine bay is pretty cluttered. I'd even say it looks bad. But from what i can tell it runs real well once its warmed up.

Also the add coolant light is on, but my coolant tank is full. Is it probably the sensor?
I just ordered a K&N air filter and 4" muffler with a silencer and im getting my 2nd gen coil pack and spark plugs tomorrow. I might get an s4 alternator, would that be smart since Im upgrading to direct fire or will it make a difference?

My other plans for this car for this month are to swap the LSD from my GSL into the black GS and get the fenders front bumper and hood on too. I possibly wanna get the GSL headlights swapped in too so they can go up and down cuz for some reason these ones are fried and refuse to go up and down, the wire just smokes if i even plug it in.

I need to prep the body for paint this spring. Thinkin about going with a dark purplish blue. Or maybe a dark metallic blue. If I can get some LE rims ill get a set and paint em gold. I feel like blue and gold would go together rather well.

I'll start uploading pics and posting more frequently now that i have more funds available.

P.S. I JUST TURNED 18 TODAY

Happy birthday!

When you say "coolant tank" do you mean the overflow tank? If so, check the coolant level under the radiator cap to be sure that the system is completely full. Sometimes the overflow will be full but the system will be low.

Keep working at it, and yes post some pics. I'd love to see it get done.
