Man I've been going through all of this thread for the past hour now and I've gotta say man, you've really got a strong head on your shoulders man. I don't think I could manage to do all that you have even if I wanted to just because of the sheer amount of dedication it takes to restore a beauty like this, and I'm surprised you haven't updated the thread any more than you have over 2021. Absolutely killer car and amazing restoration man, I'm here to see more, keep it up!
Hi all - I'm hoping to get all the final bits buttoned up on this car this year. To that end I decided to pop off the window trim so I can properly strip it before repainting it (the trim, not the car).
I'm expecting that I will need to replace all of the clips, so I'm not necessarily trying to save them as I'm doing the uninstall.
So far I've been able to safely remove the drip channel trim and all three pieces that span the top of the windshield. The trim along the bottom of the window looks like it will come off as easily as the top pieces once the side pieces are removed. But I'm getting hung up trying to remove the trim pieces that run down the sides of the windshield:
I know they're held in with 3 plastic clips and one screw. I've removed the screw at the bottom edge, and each side will slide up and down about a quarter of an inch.
I've tried some judicious prying, but I don't want to risk damaging the trim itself (I'm fine with replacing the clips).
Anyone have any hints on how to get these two pieces off?
Finally got them off!
No amount of prying from the windshield side was working. I eventually got under the 'outside' edge and was able to break the clips from that side:
The bottom trim didn't release quite as easily as the top trim did either. Eventually I determined this approach seemed to work best:
Pry up from the top, then push the clip in from the bottom edge.
The condition of the metal under the trip is in great shape. Lots of dirt, but no rust.
Plan from here is to strip the trip and repaint. New clips all around.
Atkins seems to have both styles of clips in stock - but they are $4-$5 each. Anyone know a good source for a complete set (14 + 6) for a more reasonable price? I find them on ebay for semi-decent prices, but then huge overseas shipping costs.
Thanks.
Assume the overseas supplier you speak of is Phil's Rotary in AU? If you go through their ebay store and make a list of hard to find or NLA items, you can email them direct @ sales@philsrotarys.com.au
Request a total to include one combined shipping for everything. It makes it a little more affordable.
