1984 gsl-se 3 link and Panhard bar swap.

Hey guys, just thought I would share how and why I did the 3 link and Panhard bar swap on my 84 gsl-se.

About a year and a half ago I installed a Pace Setter header, high flow cat and Atkins 5/6 port inserts.

While on a spirited drive one morning I felt a clunk after a hard launch. I thought to my self what the heck could this be. I didn't lose anything drive train related and it only happened on acceleration and deceleration. Luckily I wasn't to far from the house and when i got her there this is what I found on the upper driver side 4 link.

I parked the car for a little bit so that I could get a plan together about what to do. We ended up moving to Florida last October so I tossed the 7 on a trailer and off we went. When we got there and settled in I started disassembling the rear end and interior.

It was at this point that I decided that I was going to go with the 3 link and Panhard bar. My thought was why fix the factory 4 link if I'm going to have the car torn down I might as well improve on the factory design. I did not come up with this on my own. I want to thank the people that have done this in the past and that have given me inspiration to tackle such a project.

3 link mock up

I lost some photos along the way so the progression is not as detailed as I would like it to be. I reinforced the chassis and axle housing. I'm running a bushing mount on the chassis side and a 3/4 chromolli rod end on the axle side.

I know it's been a while since you posted this but do you remember the upper link and panhard lengths? What size heims did you use? Thanks in advance.

I used the 70% formula for the top link but it ended up being 3/4 of an inch short for the location. Sorry I can't get a measurement of the top 3 link length, there is a shifter boot weather seal in the way. The panhard bar length is 29' 3/4" insert to insert not including the rod ends. I am using 3/4 X 3/4 chromolli rod ends on the panhard and axle side with a bushing mount on the chassis side of the 3 link.

Haha sorry, just realized my dumb butt put a foot mark after the 29. The panhard bar is 29 and 3/4 inches. I hope all these measurements help with whatever you have going on.
