1984 gsl-se 3 link and Panhard bar swap.
Hey guys, just thought I would share how and why I did the 3 link and Panhard bar swap on my 84 gsl-se.
About a year and a half ago I installed a Pace Setter header, high flow cat and Atkins 5/6 port inserts. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...30adbe239f.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...ab9d331010.jpg While on a spirited drive one morning I felt a clunk after a hard launch. I thought to my self what the heck could this be. I didn't lose anything drive train related and it only happened on acceleration and deceleration. Luckily I wasn't to far from the house and when i got her there this is what I found on the upper driver side 4 link. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...17275980f4.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...ebb68a5585.jpg I parked the car for a little bit so that I could get a plan together about what to do. We ended up moving to Florida last October so I tossed the 7 on a trailer and off we went. When we got there and settled in I started disassembling the rear end and interior. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...210a263a50.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...b98e0ce355.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...92bb638221.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...5b49b4152d.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...ebb437e881.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...0086a8d84c.jpg It was at this point that I decided that I was going to go with the 3 link and Panhard bar. My thought was why fix the factory 4 link if I'm going to have the car torn down I might as well improve on the factory design. I did not come up with this on my own. I want to thank the people that have done this in the past and that have given me inspiration to tackle such a project. |
Cutting out and patching rust.

3 link mock up
I lost some photos along the way so the progression is not as detailed as I would like it to be. I reinforced the chassis and axle housing. I'm running a bushing mount on the chassis side and a 3/4 chromolli rod end on the axle side.

I know it's been a while since you posted this but do you remember the upper link and panhard lengths? What size heims did you use? Thanks in advance.

Haha sorry, just realized my dumb butt put a foot mark after the 29. The panhard bar is 29 and 3/4 inches. I hope all these measurements help with whatever you have going on.

Awesome, I really appreciate your help.
