You won't really know the truth until the motor is apart. Seems like a common failure is with the coolant seal walls on the irons. The housings may have been replaced during the rebuild, but the irons are probably older than you think. As long as it's rebuilt right away, I don't see why the housings and rotors shouldn't still be serviceable. If it sits with blown coolant seals they tend to rust out. Hopefully the rebuild will be as easy as a new seal kit, an iron or two, and reassembly.

Well at least now you will find the source of why your car had been running on the hot side recently. Hopefully it's just the turbos.

+1

I went with viton seals on my rebuild. No time on the engine yet to ascertain the pros/cons.

Well, the car was towed to Kilo Racing and the motor is going to be rebuilt. I won't know exactly what the cause was until he finishes up a couple jobs. So when he's cracking open the motor, I'll make sure to take pics so we all can Oooo and awe.

Good luck with the rebuild. What are your plans for the motor?

Good news for sure. That's what mine looked like when the seals on the turbos blew. Had to dive home smoking out the neighborhood. A lady pulled up next to me and lectured me on the evils of pollution.

Happy it's the turbo not the engine.

So, kilo sees the early stages of a e shaft/ pulley wobble that I don't need to fix right now and also that I have a handful of years left on the motor. But I'm not going to rebuild it now. Just wait until it blows.

I am going to get the turbos rebuilt by bnr.

David, I'm going to use Engine Ice this time around!

@ Johnny- how's that re-wire going? Crap that looks like a nightmare!

Thanks to IRPerformance, I was able to get the last set of BNRs on the shelf. Thank you Ihor! Only complaint is that I wish you were closer to us.

Did BNR change the Helper wastegate spring? I was reading posts made 3-5 years ago how people couldn't boost over 6lbs.

looks like alot of like minded people are going towards the same direction. I have a 94 PEP MB and I'm trying to restore it to pristine condition little bit at a time. your FD is a inspiration and motivation at the same time !! beautiful FD

how are you liking the BNRS? I have 99spec and considering upgrade once I get a pfc in there . are you able to have functional AC with the PFC ? are you on stock fuel pump and injectors ?

@kensin-

Montego Blue gets a bad wrap for some reason. Maybe it's because you only see them broken down, original paint, and not cared for. Those are what my reasons of assumption.
I was inspired by kilos son Jesus Padilla who frequents the site. His 99 spec front end with gold wheels left a burning impression inside when I had a turbo Miata. I just couldn't get it out of my head so when the time proposed itself to sell my miata, I had my sequence of color choices while on the hunt for the rx7.

Montego Blue, Black, Cym. I was fortunate to find a well cared for, original owner, every recipt filed in a book, brand new motor down to new housings and rotors. He was a retired chemical engineer from Michigan and lived 3 1/2 hours away from me here in Melbourne Florida. My wife and I visited twice and after a couple weeks of negotiations and anxiety, we purchased the car cash for 16k.

That was the start of my journey and I'm here now enjoying all of the dramatic ups and downs with the vehicle.

I had the 99 spec twins installed and it did lose some torque compared tot he usdm but they were noticeably quicker and more powerful then oem twins. You quickly forget about the lose and enjoy the new power gained. The reason why I bought the BNRs was because the 99 spec twins blew an oil seal after 4 months. Talk about a waste of money but that's the chance you risk with used old car parts. With that lesson, it was easy to go brand new twins since the vehicle has all new solenoids, vacuum lines, and sensors.

I hear a lot of people in my ear telling me to go single etc with their banter but truthfully, these BNRs are quite impressive. They lose more torque on the bottom as so the 99 twins compared to the oem twins. But they pick right up midrange all the way to the top end. They are quick and responsive at 3k rpm in the right gear. Oem location but just a little longer with bigger turbines, hollowed out housings, more fins, and great power just waiting to be enjoyed.

I have a pfc running the show and I still am able to enjoy a full function cold a/c. I am on stock injectors and fuel pump but right now I am chatting with some close friends in the community to upgrade the fuel pump real soon.

After many talks with some individuals that I have entrusted, I will be upgrading the fuel pump and injectors. I feel the need to listen to them and thank them for their time.
