Well I have decided to add a few coats of Cobalt Kandy Blue over top of the Majik blue pearl. I ordered two quarts of Kandy base coat today. I was going to go ahead and shoot the clear coat this Sunday but now i will hold off another week.

So a few things I wanted to bring up. First, as with any old fd the head light covers rear mounting tabs are broken off. So I figured I would go ahead and try the ones I see on eBay. The shipping took a month because the parts came from China. I was not surprised at what I got to be honest. They look okay fron the top although there are spider cracks in the surface. However the sides are pretty rough and would need alot of work. The mounting tabs are also questionable. I have my doubts that they will actually line up properly so I have opted to paint the originals and just add my own mounting tabs.

Anyone have any idea what a new set costs from Malloy?

Stock Vs. Ebay..

I've already shared most of these photos. The color is really interesting so far. i can't wait to show it off. It pitches from blue to purple. Like I posted I'm going to shoot some Kandy Cobalt blue over this base layer before I clear it to add some extra depth to the paint.

My shitty iPhone cannot capture the color as it looks in person. It's something to see in person.

Fender vents.... at first i wasn't sure how they would look molded in but i am digging it. Question, in the last picture at the front edge of the vent can you see the molding line? or is that just the camera. The reason i as is because i remember guys would shave their door handles and after it sat in the sun for a couple days you could see where the original panel ended and the patch started. Oh and the color is spot on.

Man, looking good!

New headlight covers are relatively reasonably priced last I looked, like $50-80 or so. They come primed and ready to shoot. Not to mention they don't look like total *** like those China covers look!

Keep at it!

I think you might be seeing the small run I had in the paint. I've got to sand it down a bit before I shoot it again. Paint work is just adding layers until it looks right. As far as the paint shrinking in and showing the body work. It shouldn't. I've done the fill proper, smoothed out the rage fill over the primer with lacquer fill and then shot a few coats of sealer over it before spraying the base coat. If I have the body work wrong it will show up in the clear, which I could work on it some there too but I don't think it will be a factor. Time will tell, this was an experiment so I will be honest about how it works out. If it shrinks in and looks bad I will post pix to warn others.

Thanks for the comment on the color. I'll get my real camera and take good pic ps when it's done.

Thanks Dale, I'll call Ray on Monday if that's all they cost ill just buy new OEM while I still can. I feel like we're up against the clock now with OEM parts availability.

Ray quoted me $84.11 each for the headlight covers back in July.

Slick looking project car. This thread may just keep me in the rotary game. Found out last night my FD has a serious water seal leak if the giant white cloud coming out of the tail pipe is any indication. I just wish I had a place like yours to do the work.

I was just curious.. hopefully they don't shrink because i think the molded in look is killer on an oem fender like that. Yes please take some up close pictures I'm interested in how it turns out. Mine heads off to the body shop this fall for a redo.

Having space is half the battle. When I got started in 1998 with RX7's I was a 23 year old renting a basement apartment and using my dads garage and tools. I did a lot of my work back then in my gravel driveway. You know that the old saying holds true "where there is a will, there's a way".

BTW, Just got off the phone with Ray. I think he said $86 but either way I have a pair on the way now. I went ahead and got new ones.

I'm working with the wrong reducer for the temps so I'm getting some runs. I've just ordered the correct reducer to get it to flash faster. I can get the runs out no problem. Just makes more work. The work around the vent looks good otherwise. No shrink in around the molded vent seam.

Still have the doors, hatch and the unibody to clear and then it's onto sanding and buffing.

I'm not ready to reassemble. I'm getting slightly closer though. All of the paint work is done. I started to wet sand out the clear coat earlier today before the football game came on. I hope to be able to start buffing next weekend. I also went ahead and placed my order on the new pillow ball set and a complete set of Super Pro suspension bushings. I will be working on that directly after the paint is buffed out. I'd like to get the car back on wheels so I can move it around. The interior will probably get stripped out right after the suspension gets re-assembled.

Anyway here is some photos that I wanted to post, Enjoy. I have a 27" iMac, sorry of these are to large for your puny little screens...
