NA 20B build

I got the rotating assembly back and then saw the picture in Blackadde's thread and felt inadequate (https://www.rx7club.com/build-thread.../#post11738237). Given my goals its not really necessary but, damn it was pretty. In any case here are some pics. Time to get my oil pan sent to Logan and get the motor buttoned up.
I did find it interesting some builders prefer to take weight from rotors to get them with-in one gram, and others say that is a bad idea to mess with rotor weights. Some even said don't bother if only spinning to 8.5K. I'm not questioning either camp as I'm sure they both have there reasons. I just thought interesting to hear the everyones opinions (some were very passionate about the subject).

No real update other than I finally boxed up the oil pan to send to Defined. This car is exactly what I wanted ten years ago... Now I've just lost interest... Back in 98' when i got my license/ bought my first FD they were the sickest cars out. Now, I feel as though I'm holding on to my first love just because. There are nicer cars now days, but something inside me tells me I'll always regret giving up...

Good new: Picked up a set of 18 inch FM10s.
Bad news: I've got a set of 17 inch FM10s, and Mach Vs to sell.
Someone buy these----> https://www.rx7club.com/wheels-tires...fm10s-1071936/

Looks like the motor will be done in a week and my mounting kit will be here as well. Its kind of funny more is happening this week than all of last year... Also, we decided to ditch the TEC3R and I'm going to pick up a M84 when I'm overseas for the holidays. VERY advantageous to pick it up overseas; about $500-600 less expensive...

It eliminates the need for my Racelogic traction control, has dual internal widebands, works with all dash displays, way more inputs to capture data (3 EGTs & 3 widebands for starters). Plus when you factor in the fact that I can sell the Racelogic and use LS2 coils vs the TEC single tower coils ($$$), the difference in price is negligible.
No someone go buy my Fikse, Racelogic, or TEC3r so my wife will stop nagging. She doesn't seem to think various car parts compliment or living room decor...

I'm going with adaptronic...
1) because I live in a state that Elliot (turblown) tunes
2) because I have heard nothing but great results from adaptronic
3) did I mention Elliot can tune?
4) I got it for a substantial amount less than most all other 20b compatible ECUs
Good luck and hop on the adaptronic bandwagon!

Aloof or dejected, I’m not sure at this point…
The car, a SSM 93 w/~36K miles has been sitting for 5+years. At the time I purchased the car I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with it; however it has such low mileage I couldn't pass it up. About 2.5 years ago I purchased a 20B somewhat on a whim. The motor had a fresh KDR rebuild, but it sat idle for several years. I decided to let PFS open it up and inspect it, and it’s been hanging out at the shop ever since. I believe the motor is re-assembled at this point in time; it’s just waiting on the oil pan. I’m not sure what the next step is. Perhaps I’ll throw it together, maybe Ray will. It all depends on our schedules and if I still want to proceed with the build.
If I liquidated my parts hoard, I believe I can cover the substantial majority of the price of a new Cayman. If I can’t make it to at least one Friday at the track this year I'm pretty sure that is the direction I'll head. Are you still having a VIR testing event this year? Maybe having a set date will provide some motivation to get this thing done. Pending scheduling conflicts, I’ll make it out there just to observe and enjoy the show.

You're not alone in your thoughts. After such a long road and so much work I almost have a hatred for my fd. You have no idea how many times ice just had to walk away from it or want to dump it. We'll see how she treats me now that it's all together, but I'm not opposed to dumping it for a viper or something the next time it pisses me off.

Add me to the list of being pissed off. Pulled the engine 2 months ago to fix various intake leaks and elctrical issues (leaks are finally fixed). Reinstall engine now it wont rev over 4k. Then the next morning it starts shaking while still on jack stands. Do a compression check and center rotor has no compression on 2 faces. I'm thinking broken apex seal spring. Pull engine again and find top peice of apex seal is in my catalytic converter. That's what I get for reusing the original 3 piece seals. Oh well because now it was a great time for me to finally install that new cosmo intermediate house I bought. Rotor housing is salvageable! Installed brand new RA seals and engine still wont rev over 4k. Now I gotta figure out what the hell I did when I originally pulled the engine to fix those electrical issues. In the end, at least I only have myself to blame.

Gordon, all my problems are self inflicted. I just fix that issue eariler today. Doing things as cheap as possible years back is what's been biting me in the *** lately. I didnt have the money I have now back then to do this project the way Id like. Its just tiny things. Back in 2009, I re-used all the connectors from my old 20b harness for the injectors and the connectors for the fd trigger pickup. Well these connectors were in bad shape but worked well enough to get the car running. It wasn't until a couple months ago that I found a site called
http://www.easternbeaver.com/main/elec__products/connectors/connectors.html
They have all the oem fd connectors and pins so I bought brand new everything. Since I was having reoccurring intake leak issues, and my secondary shutter valves were breaking, I decided it was easiest to just pull the engine and do 4,000 mile inspection and fix everything. I also test fitted a t56 to make sure it would fit with my engine moved back. Remember I built my intake from scratch and I'm not the best welder or fabricator. With the engine out, I finally found and fixed all the little intake leaks I was having and wired in the new connectors. I also re-engineered and rebuilt my secondary shutter valves. The main air leaks were coming from my peripheral port mechanisms and injectors bosses. Those are finally fixed now.
Now what caused the weird 4k rev limit problem was I accidentally crossed the main and home trigger wires on each connector. See my old connectors were in such horrible condition that as I was pinning the new connector, I held the connector backwards by mistake. So I had + going to - on both main and home trigger connectors. Obviously this was causing some erratic signals to the haltech and it went into limp mode. This issue also may have caused 1 of the 20 year old apex seals to break. She's running perfect now so I need to re-tune since now that I don't have any intake leaks, she acts completely different now. So lesson learned. Don't cheap out on builds or you will have more trial and error problems my friends.

^ Oh definitely! I think after all these years of tinkering and fixing all these annoying issues, I'll finally have a setup that I engineered/built to be everyday reliable. R&D is never as cut and dry as some would think. I should be driving it 700 miles round trip back to El Paso next weekend but need to find my A/C leak.

Very close to calling it quits; anyone interesting in picking where I left off PM me with REASONABLE offer. Unassembled C series 20B with a half bridge, Mandeville balanced rotating assembly (new MFR bearings on the rotors), three spare rotor housings, Defined Mounting Kit, Kinsler ITBs, custom header, TEC 3R... Everything is in spec per the builder that tore it apart. Also have all Mazda seals that were never ran but sat in the engine assembled for 5 years or so...
