My 93 RX7 aka The Grumpy Car

Hello fellow Rotor heads! My name is Christina and I picked up this 1993 Mazda RX7 on Good Friday of 2015.

He came equipped already with an APexi Power FC & Controller, Greddy electronic boost controller, Defi gauges, spec 99 twins with a non sequential setup; that were toasted, some sort of aftermarket intercooler, collapsed K&N filters inside a completely sealed; homemade looking; fabricated box of some kind, 1200cc secondaries, stock primaries I believe, Racing Beat exhaust and some other odds and ends like a fuel pressure regulator and so on.

He was alive and running but barely hitting 2psi upon pick up, would not rev over 4k rpm and has a bad ground somewhere sucking his life support away! So on the way home from the SC dealer I found him at, I stopped in for a surprise visit at my rotor gurus shop! He swapped some lines around and now he is like an entirely new car! It's ALIVE! LOL Still have to find this mystery, life sucking bad ground though...

Needless to say he's been previously molested a bit. I have no history on the car and what all has been done to it, other than it's been a one owner all its life and has 65k miles on it. There were no recorded wreck reports but it has been bumped on the passenger side at some point, hence the lovely red door under that fresh black paint down the entire right side of the car. I don't think it was anything super major as the car feels solid and tracks well. Just sounds like it is going to fly all to hell as you're driving it. 23 year old car problems... LOL

Over all my local rotor guru at Osley Engineering says it's not in bad shape at all and I got a heck of a deal! WOOT WOOT!

So now since I've owned it he has shed his junk spec 99s for a large single Greddy T78 kit that I found used. I know, I know a gamble buying used but I can't complain. It has worked fine so far, for the entire setup FMIC, turbo, piping and all it needed to function for $1700 bucks. But as with anything used it is a hit or miss and now as of 2/6/16 Grumpy is again sitting with a toasted turbo. Odd saying that coming from rotary owner, normally it's the motor folks are having issues with! LMAO

I've also scored a FREE vented carbon fiber hood... don't get to excited yet. It's pretty beat up and there are plans to get a new one eventually, but for now it was FREE and lwd please let that heat out! LOL Found some nice carbon fiber side skirts and threw them on. Also picked up a set of TEIN Street Flex coilovers, an AEM wideband and a engine torque dampener.

But anywho... On to the getting serious with my beloved Grumpy.

I just ordered a new Borg Warner EFR EWG 9180/1.05 AR with the 2000 degree ceramic coating to begin my actual vision for Grumpy. I can't wait! Osley Engineering is doing my complete motor refresh, street port, studding the motor, Goopy seals, balance clearance, 1300cc or 2000cc primaries, 2000cc secondaries, upgraded fuel lines, upgraded coolant hoses, upgraded vacuum/boost lines, meth injection kit, second fuel pump, tuning, and some odd and end fabrication that will need to be done. I'll have more specific details as we begin the actual build in the next couple of weeks. My rotor gurus vacation coming up is going to kill my patience! LOL But he works hard, him and his family deserve it. Glad I can help get them there!

I've also ordered custom wheels for him last week so I hope they will be ready to go in about 6-8 weeks. They are DUB X-64s in a 18x9.5 +25 for the front and a 18x10.5 +30 rear. The face of the wheels will be Lotus Aubergine Purple Pearl and the barrels are going gloss black. Still debating on a tire choice as of yet, but hey I've got time to think on it LOL. Going to have to find someone that can roll my fenders for those fatties!

Going to do my best to have all this complete before the Deals Gap Rotary Rally. So if anyone is going I'll see you there!!!

I plan to do a custom headliner and interior eventually as well so, I'll add updates to this as they come.

Wish me luck! And stay tuned...

Literally stay tuned it helps... LOL

Thanks for reading about my Grumpy Car project.

The day I picked him up from SC, THose white headlight covers! Ahhhhhhh

The interior is in great shape other than the driver seat... I guess no one ever rode with the last owner...

This! Would you look at it! Just look at it! LOL

TeeHee... Totally stealing the BF's MazdaSpeed3 wheels temporarily, since his is a MazdaNOspeed at the moment. She's (Abigail) getting built

There we go... That's much better, for now. CF hood, CF side skirts, TEIN coilovers, front lip and deboed Abigaile's wheels LOL

YAY! No more junk twins!

The word excitement doesn't even begin to cover it!!! New wheels ordered!!!

THIS!!!! GO fast goodies! BW EFR EWG 9180/1.05 AR Just ordered yesterday!!!

Too be contd....

with that EFR 9180 grumpy will be really really grumpy

FYI you can link your album photos by copying the BBCode/link and pasting it in your posts. The link can be found under the photo under "share". But if you want larger or more detailed images than sites like photobucket are maybe better.

The 9180 is huge for a 2 rotor. What are your power goals? 2000cc primaries are also enormous. Are you going e85? Most builds in the 500hp range can do the ID 725/2000. But if you're going dual pump 2000/2000 then I can only imagine you going e85 :P

That intake box from the twins looks like an M2 or a replica M2. It's actually a pretty good box along with that SMIC :P.

The twins are great when they're sequential and working right. Glad you got rid of the white headlight covers :P

Matt

I'm hopeful to go 3 rotor one day, so I'm prepping for that in with this build as well. It sucks buying things twice, lol. But for now we're shooting for between 600-700 RWHP. No e85 as far as I know, as I do not have availability to it where I am located. So 110 and meth injection.

Yes the white covers had to go ASAP! lol. And I hated the looks of the air box, just hard to see it breathing like it should without a ram air or something going into it. It literally was completely closed up other than the tubes coming out of it. And the SMIC just like the vmounts I just personally have a hard time with.... They sit right on top of the radiator and catch all that heat... I just prefer the FMIC. Hope to find a spec 99 bumper for him eventually so he'll have more air going in or some kind of bumper that I like that will offer that.

Thanks! He's not the most pretty of things at the moment... But I'm hoping by DGRR that he will at least run like a scalded dog! LOL

Exactly. and Thank you! I know the wheels aren't the typical style and or brand and sure they are going to be heavier than I'd like but bottom line is I like them. They are being custom built for my car and the face of them will be purple rather than the red pictured, which I think will help. They aren't going to be quite as concave as pictured either due to them being smaller than the red ones. So I'm pretty sure they are going to look fab. They will to me none the less.

Who knows. You might be starting a new trend with those wheels.
Hopefully they aren't too heavy. Unsprung weight is the most significant detractor of Performamce regardless what they look like.

I love how no-*****-given this build really is!

I think most guys are cringing at the purple flower design pattern but at the same time your're using some high quality mods in your build, and that's what makes it amazing!

please tell me you're gonna paint those calipers purple too?

Show and Go! I'm looking forward to seeing the final outcome of this build. Glad to see you doing things different and your way.

LOL, at your dog having a stare down with the manifold.

P.S. - Will you paint the turbo recirc valve cover? That beige makes it look off

Lmao! Thank you. Definitely wanted something different and for me and I just so happen to like purple and and lacy looking stuff. Rofl. I think when I'm completely done with it, it will be awesome and tasteful.

I have a vision, just hoping to get it there one day. Lil at a time is all you can do. But I'd say I have a decent start at it.

At least it's not pink.

And yes calipers will most likely go black since the wheel face is purple.

It will be well after the DGRR coming up before this car is ever completely done, if that is even such a thing LOL. But it's a work in progress still. I definitely like to be a bit different than the typical with most of my car projects LOL. Im hoping my vision when it all comes together will be pretty rad.

Yes Lotus was very curious about The Gleaseman's products when they got here. I think she smelled Canada on it ROFL! Im happy I went with Glease because the parts are beautiful! So shiney! And he was awesome to do business with!

I actually bought a black block off plate for the recirc valve as I wanted to use a TiaL BOV. So hopefully that will improve its appearance

Thanks for all the support, this build is amazing!

I must have left a bit of maple syrup on the manifold, poor dog!

Dude you're amazing! I have showed off your work to everyone I know that's into these cars. And they are crazy impressed! Thank you for being awesome!

I can't wait to see it all come together.

I did get word this morning that the car is likely not making its deadline for the DGRR. So yeah super duper bummed out. Guess I'll be going to the Rally in my Subaru....
