I got the engine opened up. Luckily I didn't notice any major damage. The seals that go around the outside of the rear housing were all over the place, I don't know how they usually look...and the needle bearings in the end of the e-shaft were busted up. Not too bad.

rear rotor

looking good and dirty

The rings outside have grooves, which the seals are supposed to sit in (one outside ring, one inside ring). They should not be all over, they should be within the grooves around the irons. However, when you remove the housings the gaskets may come out. You might have blew a coolant seal. Check around the irons to make sure nothing is cracked too.

Right. The seals on the front housing pulled out from the grooves too but the rear seals all came out in like 3 different layers. So I'm thinking that's what went wrong. The irons look crack free around the grooves and the housings have minimal corrosion. So overall I feel pretty good about the situation. ..just need to start saving money for the shiny stuff.

For sure!
Do the irons feel flat when you run your fingers over the surface or is there a step like feeling?

Also, I'm suggesting pink irons and neon green housings. .

I changed my prior suggestion I gave you lol

Yea everything I touched felt smooth and flat, but I'm on the road now so I can't do any further inspection.

You know, that color scheme sounds pretty good, but I was thinking maybe neon green housings with mexi chrome tiger stripes and brown irons with pink polka dots. ..I should start a poll lol

craigslist special...lots of work to do

As far as the rx7, I know I said earlier that I would be sticking with the twins but I had a change of heart and will be going single turbo.
I figured I will probably never sell this car so I might as well do what Ive been dreaming about since I was a little kid. At least I can say I have experienced a well sorted twin turbo stock 7. I have conquered the rats nest and it's time to move on.
All I know for sure so far is Im having Howard Coleman rebuild and port the engine. If I am feeling rich I will get a turblown efr8374 kit, if I'm poor I will settle for a BW s362. As far as everything else, I will have to see what the classified section has for me. Keeping an eye out for: water injection, adaptronic ecu, marine coils + relocation, fuel set up, vmic, etc...

Did you get that civic in osseo?

I only ask because I test drove one similar to that lol. I didn't buy it because the guy was a dick, the brakes were shitty, the clutch was horrible, and the guy didn't like my $600 offer :p

Yeah, the wheeler was necessary in order to hold the hoist from falling over while trying to pull it backwards on the grass...but it got the job done!

Sounds like a plan man, can't wait to see this thing take shape! Should be a blast with a single turbo setup. I'd consider doing some porting while you're in there - might as well. More power but slightly less reliable from what I've read, never experienced one myself though. Hope to get to cruise with you this spring/summer coming up - it's coming way too fast!

Hey man, haven't checked the build threads in a while, but I see you're contplaiting single. The engine I got from allrotor has a single turbo harnes still attached if you needed one. In keeping with the theme of your build.

Keep up the good work!

Yeah for sure. I'll have to hit you up when I get to that point. Then I could sell my twin harness to someone who can use it instead of hacking it up for a single.

That's what this car stuff is all about in my opinion. I'm definitely going to keep with the classified **** theme. There's just too many good, useable parts out there that need a good home.

Soon ;p...

I would have done it last week, but bought the civic instead. I predict there will be a lot of updates of minnesota rx7's after Christmas. I'll be calling mr. Coleman next weekend to schedule delivery if everything goes as planned.

Not anything too exciting. I was trying to wait until I could do an update with some pics.

I decided to just buy a rebuilt shortblock from The Goat on the forum here. The price is the same as if I sent my engine out to be rebuilt, except now I don't have to worry about shipping it out, PLUS this way I now have a complete spare engine. Win win.

I also picked up a vmount from Neutron. A banzai oil pan brace, stainless omp lines, and fuel lab mini fpr from Broke_A_Baller.

Hopefully it is warmer the next time I come home so I can get started on taking apart the engine bay and painting all the little brackets. I also got a new hvlp gun to hopefully lay down some fresh VR in the bay so the new engine will have a nice shiny home. Like you, I've been battling the cold in the garage. It's hard to get motivated to do anything when you have to worry about filling propane tanks every day and shitty lighting. I'll have to take a page or of your book and start doing some garage mods!

^ ha at least you have a garage. I've been working under a pop tent when it rains, using flood lights from the house and flash light when its dark. Layering up with 3 pants and multiple shirts for the cold.

Hey it'll be 30+ this weekend from what I see!!!
Get to it!!! Lol

I need to stop being lazy and fill up on propane. Hopefully the last time before installing my hanging heater lol.

The good thing is that this lovely weather should only last a couple more months...hopefully.

Damn Johnny that looks rough. If one thing irritates me as much as being cold, it's being wet. Your a trooper for sure.

Yeah being 30 this weekend is great and all, but unfortunately I'm stuck out in North Dakota for another week or two. It will prob be -20 again when I come home.

That sucks man, it is nice here this weekend. I hope it isn't -20 when you get back though! That would not be fun.

I got a teaser pic from The Goat at APU today.

Here's my housings.

Im going gloss black housings with flat black irons. Various other pieces in the engine bay will alternate between gloss and flat black, with a few select polished pieces. I think the visual effect will be pretty high class, like a tuxedo.
I have all the needed supplies to paint the engine bay too, Im just waiting for a few days off to disassemble the last few things in the bay and start prepping.

I've also become interested in the heat dissipating coating at www.swaintech.com....stuff looks pretty bad ***. I'm thinking about sending out my vmount intercooler to get coated. It will supposedly help the intercooler shed heat, plus it will be a nice black instead of polished. I'd like to get the oil coolers, radiator, and calipers coated too, but I'll have to see if the stuff is worth the money first before I go too deep.
