7 Years Later | RapidCancel’s 94 SSM Touring
Hi all! I just realized I passed the 7 year mark of my FD ownership, so I thought it might be a nice idea to start documenting what I do, even if it’s just for me to go back to one day. Unfortunately, there won’t be any crazy builds here, just a dude enjoying his childhood dream car. If you have some free time to read, enjoy!
To start, here’s the first time I saw her after a 6 hour drive:
Back in 2015, after 5 months of searching, the time was finally here. On the weekend after Thanksgiving, I traveled to Oklahoma check out this FD. Some good friends and I got together and after a 12 hour round trip drive, I was finally home. A 94 SSM with red interior, reliability mods done, intake, SMIC, downpipe, high flow cat, exhaust, wheels, suspension, PFC, a binder of previous service records and even the window sticker from the dealership. What really drew me in, was a clean, non cracked interior. I was searching hard to find one where the interior was immaculate, even the seat leather isn’t cracked. It was an added bonus that it was the exact color combo of my old s2000. It felt like it was just calling me.
First night in the garage:
I did maintenance and mostly just drove the car here and there and started picked up some random mods.
Some things done during this time:
2016 rolls around and unfortunately, I got laid off. So honestly, not much happened for the next few years. I started it up, drove it every once in a while when I could, and that was really it. I started getting a more stable job in the last few years so I’m starting to work on the car more recently.

So after having a bit more of a stable job again, It was time for some new wheels. I was never really a big fan of the Volk GT-P that came with the car. I happened to find a nice set of CCW Classics for sale that were matte black and had the chrome lip powder coated with a gloss black, so I picked them up. I haven’t gone out to take any proper pictures with them on the car, even though I’ve had them for a few years now.
I also ended up finding an RE-A exhaust and grabbed that too to replace the old Racing Beat single that was on the car. All in all, I’m happy with both changes and I think the CCW’s fit the car much better.

Mid last year, as I took the car out for a spin, I noticed that I had absolutely no boost for my primary turbo, it was super sluggish until the transition period. Then the secondary turbo would spool and I’d feel the car pull. After some troubleshooting, turns out it was one of the solenoids, so I figured I might as well replace them all. Since I was already going to be in there, I decided to also do a few other things while I was at it. I completely removed the ACV and the Air Pump from the car. The old block off plates were some thin sheet metal and some like the split air pipe wasn’t blocked off at all, so I replaced everything with the Full Function Engineering stuff.
• FFE Block off Plate & Idler Pulley
• Fast Reacting AIT
• Viton Check Valves
In retrospect, I wish I did even more, such as injector refresh, but I was trying to finish quickly before work was picking up steam again and I’d be putting off the car for a while. It’ll just have to wait till next time. Lucky me, my PFC screen also decided to die on me right after this, so I started planning some things to do next.
I was using the PFC to monitor my boost and water temps, so I figured it was time actual gauges, so I started slowly collecting some parts. Decided a datalogit would be a good idea too anddddd while I was at it, I might as well refresh the audio system. Only the front passenger speaker worked; the front driver would be intermittent and both rear speakers are shot. I also wanted bluetooth audio and ideally, android auto.
So some things I picked up that are on the agenda:
• Speedhut Boost & Water Temp gauges
• AEM X-Series Wideband
• FC Datalogit
• Drakes Center Speaker Double Gauge Pod & Column Pod
• Pioneer iLX-W650 Headset
• JBL Club 622 Speakers
The plan is to eventually get the amps repaired keep the rear bose tube, because I find the design so insane that I love it and just run new front speakers. I also don’t want to deal with trying to find replacement interior parts to adding rear speakers or removing the tube.

Nice car in very clean original condition!
I have owned my silver FD since early 2015 as well.
tt was pretty close to bone stock when I got it.
Could not resist the gradual personalization of the car, and I am now over 55 changes from original.
But I always keep in mind taking it "back to stock". (As if....)

Been planning out how I wanted to run the wires for the gauges and started working on making the harness for them. I’m going to have the power and ground terminate to 2 connectors, one for the boost/water gauges and one to the AFR, so I can disconnect them individually if ever needed.
Power and ground to the connectors:
Connector to boost/temp gauge:
Connector to AFR and datalogit:
It looks like both front speakers and radio were serviced in 2012, going by the stickers on them, but it looks like whoever took off the door panels didn’t realize there were screws at the door handle trim and broke them on both sides, likely just force pulling the panel out with the screw still attached. Will replace them, although I’m not sure if I want to go with the metal ones or not. Got both front speakers mounted and was going to take the connectors off the old Bose to wire them, but part of me wanted to preserve it in case I ever wanted to go back for any reason or mainly just keeping the original parts intact, so I wired up 2 spade connectors instead for the new speakers.
Will start routing all the wiring soon and hopefully have the radio completely installed as well.

Tomsn16 may have some of those pull cups atm. Best to contact him quickly.
The mounting bolts people often miss are the ones behind the passenger window switch and in the lower panel below the armrest.
Also people fail to lift the door card straight up to disengage the top hanger pins.
The foam isolators for the upper three metal hanging clips often rot away. The clips then sit on bare metal and are a major source of rattles.
Look to replace the 1/8" inch foan squares.
Also replacing all the anti-squeak stripping is helpful if they have disapeared or are dangling.
Silencing the doorcards greatly improves the feel of the interior..
You might also want to reinforce the foam bridges in the door cards that support the door plastics. Especially if the little metal reinforcement bands are missing.
