1992 jdm rx7

Hey everyone, I thought I would share the past, present and future progress on my car, but first a little backstory. I'm coming to the whole rotary world from the Mitsubishi Evo platform...quite a change coming from a 4 door, AWD, 3500lb car to a 2 door, Rear wheel, 2700lb car. I have been racing dirt circle track since I was 8 years old, I'm 30 now. I have been wrenching, racing and enjoying cars and trucks my entire life, if it has an engine I'm interested. I sold my Evo back in the Spring, was such a hard day for me as I loved that car. I knew my next car was going to be either a Supra, GTR R32 or R33 or an RX7(you have to understand I was 11 when the first Fast and Furious was released and that is why I love Japanese cars to this day haha). After contemplating and searching for months, I finally landed on a GTR R33 or an RX7 as Supras were above my pay grade. I called Driver Motorsports in Rustburg, Virginia and talked to the owner Chris. After talking to him for an hour he told me, "If you want a car that is a drivers car you go with the RX7.", so that's what I did. After searching for a few weeks he found a BB 1992 RX7 with 38000km(roughly 27000miles). The car was graded a 4/B at auction so I purchased the car. It was tracked in Japan but was overall well kept. We began the importation process but Covid-19 really hurt just about every aspect of getting the car to the U.S. 3 months down the road the car was delivered and the building process began. Driver Motorsports is doing all the work for me so I don't get to enjoy pulling my hair out every time something goes wrong lol, you know the whole, "When you're young you have all the time but no money, when you're old you have all the money but no time."

Here is the car as it was after I purchased from auction. I was not a fan of the GReddy stickers but I knew the car was going to be resprayed once we got it to the U.S. Only time I put stickers on my cars if if I'm being being by sponsors.

After getting the car the first thing they did was check compression...it wasn't good, so they pulled the motor. After Chris delivered the bad news, I thought you know maybe its a blessing in disguise, lets go ahead and do a streetport while its being rebuilt. I have a TO4R turbo that is going on the car so I figured the porting would open it up more. My goal is 400-450 rwhp. We believe this is very achievable on a conservative tune.

The bay cleaned up really well

I ordered a few products from LRB Speed as they are well spoken for on this forum. These will be powder coated in wrinkle black.

Another great product from LRB Speed. I went with a flat door panel as I knew the seats going in the car had large shoulder bolsters and I would need more room. These are being powder coated wrinkle black as well.

My seats are Sparco Pro2000's as they are one of the few fixed back seats that are comfortable and also can pass FIA tech but they are wide and tall. Had a little hick up trying to go with sliders and side mounted. The seat was on the roof

CJ is sitting in the car and you can really see how high they are with that mounting.(yes the car is dirty but she hasn't been fully detailed and preped before paint yet)

Shoulder bolsters were so wide the door wouldn't close even with the LRB door panels

Here is where we are as the finish of the day today.

Had to eventually take out the sliders and side mount and go with a fixed bottom mount to get the seats to fit in the car

I know Sparcos aren't JDM but I do like the way they look in the car and I love the way these seats hold you in the car and how comfortable they are

I was concerned with being able to properly use my 6 point harness without a harness bar and the lack of harness bars on the market that can pass tech, so this is what they came up with. This will be sprayed with a satin black

Here is how it is being mounted in the car. This is getting a satin black finish

Congratulations on the purchase. Sucks about the compression but at least you start with a fresh engine and It’s looking good so far. What did/do you race on the oval?

That’s awesome. We have a small dirt track here in town that runs bikes ,midgets, and carts. Nothing better than dirt track. I’m trying to convince the kids it’s what they want to do.
