04G35s Build Thread
#26
My plans for the car are street driving and light track use, I will see how I like it and it may turn into more track use than street.
The car came without A/C and the ABS does not work properly so it has to go. I need the room in the engine bay and its a crap ABS system to begin with. The power steering I have been on the fence about. I would love to clean it up a bit under there and remove it, but I may just keep it for street driveability/parking.
As far as goals go, I am shooting for 600-650rwhp which I have the mods to support. I am working on a lot of the simpler/supporting mods then will most likely rebuild the motor as I am not sure whats in it.
I am young-ish, but this is by no means is my first turboed or modified car, so I know what I am doing. (For the most part, I am constantly learning more about the rotary). I a few other cars I drive daily so I am not worried about all of the fluff people bend over to try to keep. Also I live in WI... The summers are pretty mild so no need for A/C.
Engine Mods:
Mild Street Port Engine (What I was told by the PO)
Xcessive LIM
JDM UIM
Walbro 450lph pumps x2
-8 Feed Lines
-6 Return
Aeromotive FPR
CJ Motorsports Fuel Rails
2200cc Bosch Secondary Injectors x4
1350cc Bosch Primary Injectors x2
HKS Twin Power
Custom V-Mount Intercooler/Rad Setup
3" Charge Piping
Customer Exhaust Manifold
Tial 44mm Wastegate
Tial 50mm BOV
3.5" Down Pipe
3" Custom Mid Pipe
HKS Ti Rear Section
Garret T04Z Turbo (1.15AR Exhaust .60 Cold... I know Ill need to upgrade for my power goals)
Tuned with AEM v1
Hope this answers some questions.

You got some good parts on there
My car came with A/C not charge as well, and I never have the need to get it charge. I have daily a car without ABS (base model) for years without any problem, rain or snow, so I don't see any disadvantage removing it. PS on the other hand is definitely good to keep.

if you plan on tracking the car as a novice or intermediate you're going to need ABS. otherwise, you'll be scared to push the brake pedal down hard enough to actually stop the car (because it's so easy to lock wheels up unless you get a bias controller and tune it perfectly), and everyone will be outbraking you at every corner. i know this from experience. also, saying it's a "crap ABS system to begin with" just doesn't make sense. how is it crap?
i went to road atlana twice in my red FD and was able to completely stand on the brake pedal at the end of the back straight while going 150mph and not have any of the wheels lock up (and was stopping as fast or faster than any other car out there) with hawk HT-10s. it has also worked perfectly for me at 4 other tracks this year.

I guess I should have prefaced it with my ABS system must not work correctly, if I pull into my garage to quickly my ABS kicks on. I have also read on numerous threads on here that it is an inferior system and if you ever want to track your car seriously, you need to remove it.
That being said, I have built quite a few cars and never had ABS or took it out, it comes down to personal preference I guess! I am sure there will be many opinions going both ways. I will also be upgrading to a BBK in the future once the engine is all sorted out.

I wish, I have been out of town for the last two weeks traveling for the holidays and a friends wedding, just over 1900 miles in two weeks!
I did get my second Walbro 450lph and will be working on the mount tonight or tomorrow. If I can have a weekend I would get a ton done. I need to work on pulling the coolers, trans, and engine so I can start on the ABS delete and main harness.

You're running 2 walbro 450s? Aren't you only trying to make 550?
When you're pulling the motor watch the firewall. I put a kink in mine when I pulled it (twice!). I have a hardline abs delete kit.
I am not sure how "Alex Rodriguez" kit runs compared to the hardline kit (with flexing), but DIY hardline is a lot less expensive to do. When I pull everything out of the bay to do my harness I'll figure out how to tuck those too.
Good luck with the build!
Looking forward to updates. -Nick

Thanks for the advise! I am planning on doing a DIY hard line kit with the OEM proportioning valve to make it easy/cheap.
I am making 505RWHP right now and my goal is 550-600. From the research I have done and reading posts from Howard I figured out I am right on the line of maxing that pump out. I could run a Boost-A-Pump or a second pump, for the ease of install and to have room to go up if I wanted, I decided to run a second pump. You also have to remember I am running E85 so I need a lot more fuel.

I guess running e85 would help prevent carbon build up.
Either way looking forward to see progress.

Well small update:
I got my fuel pump assembly competed last night. The only thing left is to get a pipe for the return line. Let me know what you think, its by no means pretty but should work perfect.
Feed is two -6 into a -8 and the return is -8. Pumps are two Walbro 450lph E85. Power and ground wires a 10ga. I used self sealing washers with a stainless bolt for the pass through. Obviously the hole in the top is larger than the bolt to prevent grounding. Used sealing butt connectors (Removing the crimping area) to insulate the solider job along with heat shirk (Which I know will most likely not last forever).

So clean. Thanks for the motivation.
You're still using the stock gas tank right? Ive heard so many myths about e85that I don't know what to believe about it. Two things Ive heard about it that concern me are, you need a new fuel cell, and it eats the oil control rings in the engine. I don't know if those things are true, but it looks like its working for you and others on the forum.
Is it the stock transmission too? What clutch? Any issues at 500hp?

Thank you!
I have no issues at all with E85. I am using the stock tank and have no issues with any seals what so ever drying out. I have also heard that running premix with E85 will help prevent seals from drying out. I plan on running premix once I get the car back together this spring.
I am running a stock rebuilt trans. It will need another rebuild as it is grinding 4th-5th sometimes.
Clutch is an ACT HDR6 (6 puck unsprung) That will also be swapped out for a twin disk for drive-ability. It has no issues holding the power, it is just a pain to drive on the street.

I did also figure out what burnt up in the passenger rear area of the car, it looks like at some point someone tried to "upgrade" the antenna and wired in the one thats in it now... and it burnt up the harness. I just cut it out since I will be deleting the antenna anyway.
As you can see the inner quarter area was also damaged from the fire. I sanded down everything behind the trim and used bed liner to protect the metal. I also re applied the seam sealer that was burnt up.

I have an extra ABS unit if you want to try and get your car set up right. I pulled the ABS and did custom lines on my old car about eight or nine years ago. It's makes the engine bay a little cleaner but that's about it. It's your car and you can do what you like but I tend to agree with others about the urge to rip the ABS, AC and PS. Seems like the "cool" thing to do but isn't really that good of an idea. I regretted pulling AC, didn't miss the ABS as much but I am a little
Older and wiser now. I have driven several street FDs with no power steering and that's just dumb. No good reason for that one for sure.

I think I am going to take the advice of most and keep the PS, its a huge asset and to remove it to simplify seem dumb.
The A/C was gone when I bought the car, yes I miss it but it is one of many cars I own so I just dont take it out if its to humid or I can sweat a little.
The ABS is coming out to simplify and frankly I just do not like ABS. Most of the cars I have built in the past did not have it so I am not worried about it. But thank you for the offer!

It's an uphill battle sometimes. :-)
You can re-install air conditioning if you're so inclined. It makes a huge difference. Take my word for it. I don't care where you live, an FD in the summer with no AC gets miserable. The car gets no wind In the cabin with all the windows down and sunroof open. They spent too much time in the wind tunnel. You have to hang a hand out to get and draft and the heat soaks in the cabin pretty bad through the firewall and trans tunnel.
Seriously worth reconsidering. These cars are way more fun when it doesn't suck sitting through red lights etc cause the heat.
