66.7% fee for using credit card?
Found this ad on craigslist while browsing for some rotary parts. I have heard of rotaryshack being shady, but this much?
original link:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv...394240382.html
ROTARYSHACK IS OUT TO RIP OFF ANYONE HE CAN SO I'D ADVISE STAYING AWAY.
THEY TRIED TO CHARGE ME AN EXTRA $220 TO PAY FOR A $330 PART WITH A CREDIT CARD. I WAS QUOTED $330 FOR A DIFFERENTIAL 3RD MEMBER. WHEN I WENT TO PAY WITH PAYPAL I WAS UNABLE TO DO SO, BECAUSE THE TRANSACTION WAS CONSIDERED HIGH RISK.MIND YOU I WAS USING A CORPORATE MASTERCARD THAT HAS NEVER BENN TURNED DOWN EVER BEFORE.
SO I CALL ROTARYSHACK ONCE AGAIN AND HE GIVES ME A STORY AND HE SAYS HE IS GOING TO SEE IF HIS BUSINESS PARTNER WILL LET ME JUST USE A CREDIT CARD,,, I'M THEN TOLD THAT THEY WILL BE TAXED TOO MUCH AND THEY WILL NOT TAKE CARDS. SO I OFFER TO PAY WITH A CHECK.AND ACCORDING TO ROBERT THAT'S PERFECTLY FINE. SINCE THE TRANSACTION WAS OVER $250 IT IS POLICY FROM MY JOB THAT I REQUEST A W9 FORM.
I REQUEST THE FORM AND NOW THE GUYS AT ROTARYSHACK GET PISSED OFF SO THE PHONE CONVERSATION ENDS.
NOW ROBERT STARTS TEXTING ME:
ROBERT: he will do your credit card for $550 total
ME: the total was $330, why are you adding $220 to it
ROBERT: for the hassle
ME: Maybe it is a hassle but that's how corporate operates. That's why I was trying to see if you would just take my card number instead.
ROBERT: he will take your credit card for an added fee
ME: how much is the fee?
ROBERT: 220
ME: you could just say you'd rather rip me off than have my business.
ROBERT: It's not my fee, that was what my neighbor wanted for using his credit card machine, his time, and to cover taxes.
ME: do you offer all your customers a rip off as an option? why would I agree to that?
ROBERT: I definitly wasn't trying to get you to agree, that's a rip off! It was an option
this ******* admits he was fine with ripping me off, and he avoids tax papers at all costs
66.7% OF $330 IS $220
EVERY ROTARY SHOP I HAVE CALLED CHARGES ONLY 2% ON A CREDIT CARD TRANSACTION
SO BASICALLY: ROBERT AT ROTARYSHACK THINKS IT IS FINE TO GET HIS NEIGHBORS INVOLVED IN HIS BUSINESS AND RIP OFF POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS AND SEEMS TO HAVE A RISKY REPUTATION ON PAYPAL.
HE CONTINUES TO THREATEN ME SAYING I'M SLANDERING HIM; BUT EVERY WORD OF WHAT I'M SAYING IS THE TRUTH
( I have the tape recordings, voice messages and the saved text messages to prove it)
I PLAN ON POSTING THIS ON EVERY SINGLE RX-7 FORUM THAT EXISTS.
AND IF YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW ROBERT PERSONALLY FEEL FREE TO SHOW HIM WHAT I HAVE WRITTEN ON HERE.

Strange; there's no extra "tax" on credit card purchases. The card company charges a transaction fee based on sales percentage, but it's nowhere near that much.
I don't know the guys there nor have I ever bought from them; only know of them from stuff I read here.
I'm not sure as I'd go so far as saying he tried to "rip you off," though - - he explained to you exactly what was going on, told you why he was saying what he said, and left the option in your hands. He didn't try to conceal anything that I can see.
If you started riffing on him about trying to rip you off when he was trying to find some way to accomodate you, I could see how maybe he got pissed off and hung up. Not saying I wouldn't have been angry, either, but I can kind of see both sides.
He may be in the same spot a lot of small businesses and "garage operations" are; no legit way to transact credit card business due to the costs involved with maintaining a card-processing account. Maybe he's got cash-flow probs and can't float the cost of procuring the part until the CC company credits him - - which can take a month or more, I've heard. Could be a lot of reasons, some legit, some not.
Don't really have a dog in this fight but it sounds to me more like Robert's neighbor was trying to rip him off, when he was just trying to find a way to transact a sale.
Maybe would have been better if he just said there was no way he could do anything other than a cash transaction, but it sounds like he went out of his way to find SOME way to make the deal happen, rather than just saying "cash only, sorry."
I buy a lot of stuff for personal use through channels I'd never try to make fit into my company's procurement rules. Like buying ANYthing off of ebay or CL; you're not going to get a W9 there, either, because most of them don't report or collect sales tax.
Were you going to be paying sales tax on this, or was this a "cash and carry" side deal?
I think maybe you're being a bit harsh trying to wreck the guy over this. It's not like he charged your CC extra $$ without your agreement. That WOULD be ripping you off.
Anyway, just my 2c.

Again, not picking sides, just saying; the seller sells and the buyer buys. So long as all is agreed before money changes hands, & goods are as described, or the deal is backed out beforehand, I just don't see how it can be called "ripping someone off."
If the seller says the only way the deal can happen is $x cash or $x + y credit more for a W9 sale, and the buyer won't go there, then it's just a "no sale."
Had a similar thing happen to me through a VERY VERY reputable parts vendor, advert on their web page said "most cast-iron exhaust manifolds" were available, at $50. I called and asked after the one I needed; they said "oh, that's a rare year, we've only got one left: $500." I told them that they adverted at $50; they said "it's $500 or no sale for that year, take it or leave it."
It was no sale. Found another one elsewhere.
That's not a ripoff; it's maybe false advertising (probably not, as the listing says "most") and it's pretty poor customer relations, but the seller decided that their part was worth more to them than my business at what I was willing to pay.
Again, just my opinion.

i agree. he didn't really rip anyone off. he told him how much the increase was gonna be and then the buyer has the option not to participate if they wished not to.
annoying? yes. Bad mojo? probably. Rip-off? not really.

So, what youre saying is that you really did tell him there was a $220 charge to use a credit card?
And you think it is justified because of what you think was going on?
Here's the deal--your neighbor, if this is true, just tried to do a major no-no....and by you passing that offer along, you put yourself squarely in the hot seat. This is just one more reason why it doesnt pay to operate an illegal, unlicensed business.....if your shop were legit, you could easily accept credit cards without all this drama.

We strongly question the company’s reliability for reasons such as that they have failed to respond to complaints, their advertising is grossly misleading, they are not in compliance with the law’s licensing or registration requirements, their complaints contain especially serious allegations, or the company’s industry is known for its fraudulent business practices
this guy was trying to use someone elses credit card, and i don't think he even had a paypal account.
2--you dont even know if he had a paypal account? You only use paypal, and when he said "I want to charge it", you didnt even think to ask if he had a paypal account that he could use the charge card on?
