WI on a FC with TMIC?

Hi guys,

Came up with a few old results from searching, but nothing definitive.

I'm currently using my FC for drifting, it makes about 300rwhp at 14psi with:
Extend port
Knightsports Hiflow
PowerFC
HKS TMIC
3" exhaust

After 2-3 corners the IAT's get pretty scary - on a 25c day it will be at about 70c, and if I keep on it it will get up to 90c pretty easily, so I'd like to see if WI (straight water) and some better engine bay ducting will be effective. Alternatively I'm looking at FMIC/VMIC but I like keeping the standard arrangement if possible.

Not chasing any more power, just want to keep it safe. Keep in mind it's a casual drift car, not for competition - so I'm happy if it at least stays cool for 1-2 laps before needing a cooldown lap.

Question time!

1. Any success stories of keeping IAT's reasonable whilst on track (grip/drift) while running a TMIC with WI? Preferably in an arrangement that reduces heatsoak of the TMIC itself, rather than cooling the intake charge post TMIC.

2. Any issues with running the injector nozzle at location "1" in my image below? (not my engine bay), HKS TMIC has a threaded port there already. I intend to run something like m10x1.25 male to female 1/8npt adaptor to fit the water injector, so there may be say 1" of thread that the water has spray through first before it hits the actual air flow.

3. Alternatively, I could put the injector at location "2" in the image below, on the exit pipe of the HKS TMIC - is this too close to the IAT sensor?

4. Vague question, but how much water do you guys go through out on track? Would 1-2 gallons last me the day, or should I go for a 5 gallon?

5. Which kit to choose! Looking at post turbo only, complete kit and Aquamist is unfortunately out of the budget. As I'll be running straight water, the additional failsafe's aren't too important. So far I'm tossing up between the AEM v2 and Coolingmist stage 2.

Really appreciate any input you guys are able to provide, feel free to tell me not to waste my time and just go FMIC/VMIC.

Cheers,
Bry

Check out my build thread. I go over a lot of this stuff in detail.

I mounted my nozle post intercooler, I have heard there could be issues where water condenses inside the core if your temps get too cold.

As far as iat sensor issues, it should not be a big problem as long as it's not actively being referenced for ignition timing.

Me and a buddy of mine will go through 1.5~2 gallons in a track day. I usually just have my 2.5 gallon tank topped off at the start of the day and it'll last me. Additionally, I have built my own kit and see no issues with it thus far.

The issue you're having has more to do with the thermal capacity of the TMIC than anything. When sideways, there's not much air going through the top mount, so its basically acting like a heat sync, increasing in temp until it's roughly the same as the inlet temp. Running straight water will help prevent knock and add safety, but it's not going to help with the power-robbing heat soak. You either need to add more mass, or more airflow. The AEM V2 is a nice kit. I wired the safety output to a relay to disable the boost controller solenoid. It worked perfectly and cut boost the couple times the tank ran low.

Use a CO2 fogger on the top mount. https://www.google.com/search?q=CO2+...ShFg4Lfl7pM%3A

Have you considered pre-turbo or pre-TMIC spraying? Pre-turbo will reduce the heat made in the turbo, and pre-TMIC will drop the temps in the IC.

(Stock TMIC)

I'm spraying 150cc into the turbo and 500cc into the throttle body (post IAT sensor). Just the pre-turbo nozzle is dropping my IATs something like 10-20C, estimating from my logs.

In the past, I researched fluid flow vs gas density, and the intercooler should gain some slight overall airflow capacity with the denser charge from pre-turbo injection. It's not a significant gain, but the denser charge will not hurt the overall max flow.
