Moving to Australia
Moving to Australia
Hi,
To everyone here from down south, i have a question regarding moving over to Australia.
Do you guys have any information for people who want to migrate to Australia? Like how to get work etc. I already looked for a VISA and how to apply for one. But how about working, can you easily find a job in the trade/technical sector (for my GF desing sector)
Any news would be appreciated.
Oh, btw. can I import my FD free of importduties etc?
Regards
Rogier

You need to check out the state government web pages for the information you need.
Which state are you headed to? Just go to thier webpage and you should be able to find everything you need.

Looking for NSW, sydney. Been looking at the dimmi?? www.immi.gov.au But maybe someone has some pointers on what to look out for.
http://www.nsw.gov.au/ is a good start. Has links to virtually all the questions you asked.
Good luck with the move mate. I am currently working/studying in Germany (been to the Neatherland several times - like 2 hrs drive from where I live) so I know what a big move it is. Have fun!

Ah thanks.
Yeah, you did a big move to. How long were your preperations? Im thinking of moving over in aboutg 1 1/2 year.
What was your reason to move to Germany and where are you staying exactly? Maybe we can meet up sometime.

Well the decision was made in the space of about 2 months for the time I was told to the time I left for Germany. It basically was the best opertunity to work on my PhD in a more central science type enviroment - more experts, equipment and money. I am in Wuppertal (near Koln) at the moment and sometimes in Munich to work at the new Proton Therepy Center.
I'd be happy to meet up some time, just PM me. Your Rx-7 sounds sweet with all the mods I'd love to see it. I hardly see any Jap cars in Germany.
Cheers

haha. Thanks. She's nice, but not yet perfect, bad frontbumper and some minor dents which need to be sorted first. And ofcourse get her running.
Thats a very quick decision you had to make. Did you bring your rx7 with you? or ??
Koln is a 2 hour drive for me on normal speeds. Ill be happy to drop by or meet sometime.

Nah, I bought a VW Golf after about 12 months of taking public transport. I have a '93 S13 Silvia Q's back in Oz. The next car will be a Series 8 RX-7 when I finish the PhD work. The problem with importing Aust -> Euro or vice versa is that Australia is Right hand Drive and Europe is Left hand drive. My advice would be to just buy another one when you get to Australia - I think a '93 Rx-7 starts at less than $28,000(AUD) which less than 12,000Euro.
Oh and my quick decision was due to the original plan to only be here 3 months... now 18 months or so later I have no idea when I will move back home to Australia. Maybe mid next year when I finish or maybe the year after if I stay to do some more professional work.
Which city are you in?
Cheers

Well driving a Japanese car in Germany is like swearing in the Church
The series 8, thats nice. If I had the money.... My car is a JDM FD, so the steering is right, importing it into australia would be no problem. ANd Im very attached to it, or It should give me real money.
But the Silvia is nice, you do drifting or something? You can easily import a series 8 rx7 into germany, however the cost are going to set you back bigtime.
PhD, is doctor right?? What work are you looking into? What part of Australia are you from and what do you think of Europe/Germany so far?
Whoah, thats a lot of questions already.
Im based in Hengelo OV, which is 15 minutes from the border. Its in the east of the Netherlands, nearby german cities are Nordhorn, Gronau, Ahaus.

I'll have to look you up on the map
I'll wait till I live in Australia again to get the S8. As you said it costs too much here... and the price of petrol!!!
Yeah I love the Silvia, but it is non-turbo, so not a drift car. Just a street car but with some nice suspension mods which would make it a decent track car if I ever decided to take it to the sprints.
PhD is Doctor yes. I am doing Superconducting Filters and implementing them in Mobile Phone Base Stations (the towers) in order to improve coverage and capacity of the system. Had some nice success with it too. In Munich I am commisioning a Proton Accellerator (Cryclotron) which will be used to treat cancer (hopefully by the end of the year). I really find it all interesting.
I am from North Queensland, which is a tropical region, so it's always hot. Germany and Europehas been exciting and different, so many things so close together and so many different people and cultures. I am sure Europeans take it for granted but to an aussie I think it is difffernt and exciting. The language is still an issue though as I have not had time to learn German properly.
Being from QLD I don't know that much about NSW which is why I pointed you towards the govenment website. What is your trade/study?
Cheers
Adrian

Do so, its not that far away, 2 hours driving is peanuts for an Aussi
The petrol pricing here is nuts, in Australia its like 70 eurocent per liter, that are good numbers.
You have some nice projects going on, sound interesting. What age are you btw?
I think going abroad always has some exciting things, did you have an employee invite you over or is it study? What company are you working for Siemens perhaps?
Im in the process of doing a lot of reading on the websites, but there is so much information, that I have to make sure not to get lost
My study is (actually I have 2) is International business and Engineering and now just started on Management and rights. At the moment i'm unemployed unfortunately, hope to have a job soon. Im following evening classes.
According to the government website I can earn good points with these, what makes me smile haha.

my age is 24 (born 1981)
I am with a company called Cryoelectra and contracted to Accel for the work in Munich. Smaller than Siemens but more specialised.
Jobs are easier to come by in Australia then Europe I think. Particularly if you are qualified and yeah all my friends who when through Business/Management have jobs as do all those who did Engineering. I am sure you will find something if you made the move.

importing your FD will be relatively easy if you have owned it for 12 months+ (you can utilise the personal import regs - do a search for the DOTARS (gov) site). However, you will have to pay (on top of the obvious shipping fees) 10% import tax (based on an independantly evaluated valuation), plus customs fees (steam cleaning, and other such rubbish), plus broker fees, + 10% goods and services tax (GST) on top of all of that. Not exactly cheap - but it's quite do-able.
Thanks DaiOni, I will look for the site. Youre from down under as well?
I will see if I can calculate the cost of it, maybe if someone would like to buy it overhere I will sell it. Depends on what it will sell for.

92 FDs, in particular, are easily into the 20s nowadays (even the rare good ones) - go take a look at redbook.com.au and see what they give as an average price (you're in for a shock). What you see them advertised for, and what they actually go for, are two different realities. However, due to common perceptions, plenty still go for 'outrageous' prices as there are enough fools out there to pay the cash.
Why you'd pay $35k for an old aussie FD, when you can get a late version update for not much more, is beyond me.
Also, personal imports (the only legal imports from 91-98) also bring the prices down. Again, god knows why - as I can't see why people regard leather, sunroof, and an australian logbook as good things. The first two add weight, and the other assumes that mazda australia were/are competent (LOL).
anyway, that's my rant for today

and put another slant on this, it can be very difficult to get Insurance for Imports - most companies here won't touch them at all.And since they did a retrospective recall on a whole bunch of Sylvia Imports and declared that they could never be registered, I wouldn't touch an import with a barge-pole, unless it was for a race car.
And they have reduced the value of my Aussie-delivered cars, dammit!!

I don't know for sure but radiation wise it is not like it was back in the days of Analogue and the first digital phones when the phones used to transmit with more than 1W of power. Now it is less than 200mW (200mW is the maximum - when your signal bar reads the lowest value it will be at this power). But if you are really worried about it use hands free - they have bluetooth hands free now - no cables, very very low transmit power and you don't get the phone close to your head. But that is all I know since I am not working on the phones themselves.
What was the dole que comment about? I didn't think it was possible to get the dole till you were an Australian citizen?
Cheers

I didn't ever hear about the the recall on Silvias'. But I agree you need to take some care with buying a Grey Import - I think it is safer to get one which is already registered and complied.

Simple fact is i cant fit in an aussie model with a sunroof at all. Plus Bose and the little storage bins are very amusing. But yeah, even though my Efini is mint is will still only be an import in some peoples eyes.

I'm 25...my car is fully comp insured at around $800..used to be $1300 a couple of years ago. Not that expensive. When i buy my parents S8 next year hopefully it will be around the same to insure.
