5th gear syncro fix in nz

heard this is a pretty common fault in the rx7 gearbox... has anyone got theirs fixed before? where and how much did it cost? mine needs doing, just want to know roughly how much will i be looking at. im in christchurch nz

I have fixed broken/worn 5th gear synchros before in series 5 turbo boxes. It's the easiest synchro to get at because of the modular 5th/reverse housing on the mazda boxes.
In saying that, it's still not the easiest job to do. Not sure how much it would set you back sorry.

hi

im looking for some information on s6,s7 and s8 boxes. Ive heard they blow 3rd gear, especially if you are using them for track work. Is there a simple up grade or a stronger box you can use.Im in Christchurch also.

hey 13br32, from what i've heard and seen, the gearbox in the fd's are very strong and can handle over 600hp, the only myth i've heard is the 5th gear syncro, they tend to be the weak part of the gearbox. i had my 5th gear syncro ring replaced a few months ago, cost like $50 something for part and like 300-400 or so for labor at al marsh. hes a rotary engine specialist. great guy to talk to. just wondering how much power is ur car putting out? and how is your driving style lol? they play a big part of the durability of the gearbox and clutch. if you really want to look into strengthening your gearbox, maybe you can look into cryo- treating or Teflon coating? or just get a racing box which will set u back like 15-20k. got any photos of ur car?
