AZ Couple of AEM Series 1 Questions...

Hi everyone,

I am new to the AEM and am getting everything ready to install an AEM Series 1 EMS in my single turbo FD. I will be making the move to the AEM from a Power FC, which has served me well.

I have a couple of set up issues that I am having a hard time finding an answer to searching the internet.

Right now I have 4 AEM Smart coil with 2 of them firing in wasted spark from the Power FC. Moving to the AEM I would love to have a full direct fire set up. I know how to get everything wired correctly but I am just confused on how to properly set the software up so everything fires correctly. I believe it is called the coil phasing in the AEM literature.

As of now I have 2 ID 1000 primaries and 4 ID 1000 secondary injectors. Each secondary injector driver from the Power FC drives 2 injectors. I am completely out of fuel even with high fuel pressure and planning to move to 4 ID 2000 as secondary’s but wire the 2 extra secondary injectors directly to the AEM. I am just not 100% sure that I can have more secondary’s then primaries. From reading the documentation all I can determine is the secondary’s need to be equal to or larger than the primaries so I think I am good but just wanted to make sure.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am out of town. My cell recpetion isnt all that great So, I haven been on here much. I dont have the software in front of me so this maybe a little wrong but you should be able to find it. Ignition > advanced Ignition > Ignition Phasing. You will take the value from 1B and you will put it in the coil 4 position. I believe the number is a 4 or a 6 something. The "B" outputs are the wasted spark ouptuts. This will move the wasted spark event and put it to the coil #4 output. You will need to wire the 4th coil to the leading #2 coil. The pin is 4Z. Check the 30-1800 AEM manual to verrify. If you need new pins let me know I have a lot of them.

You are making 500-525whp? I dont think it matters what the actual balance is, more primary or more secondary. I would set more secondary just to make idle control easy. You will do the same thing you did with the coil phasing to the injector phasing. You need to set up the staged flow ratio. There is a math equation in the AEMPro help manual or you can open the AEMTuner and there is a wizard that will do the math for you. Once you have the staged flow ratio you can set the balance table. I do the math to find the max flow balance. That way you know you are using all of the available injector flow. You can log Inj duty pri and Inj duty sec. you can watch the duty between the two and adjust the balance if needed. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks for the answers.

In May I put down 560whp @ 23psi with a idle fuel pressure of 62psi on E85. Injector duty cycle was almost 92%. Now with the colder weather I am getting a little more boost creep and Injector duty cycle is 98%. I'm guessing I am in the high 500whp range. Decided to shut it down for the winter and get the car done properly before I break something. Hopefully the AEM, 4 x ID 2000 secondary's, a 2nd knock sensor and a high quality exhaust manifold will do the trick.

Hey guys sorry for bringing back such an old thread but i may have the chance to buy an aem series 1 soon is it still a relevant ecu or is it too out dated

For being in a forum with other ecus like, Haltech E6k, F11, PowerFC, Electromotive, Wolf and, PFS PFC, This ECU is far from outdated. It has full OMP control, 3D split timing, Staged injection control, Provisions for Aux Inputs, Good data logging and, Sequential control. It is lacking some of the more sophisticated features of the Series II ECU. I would check the updates listed on the back of the ECU to make sure it is current. If it is not AEM charges $90 shipping included to inspect and update an ECU. Do you know what the SN# is?

The ecu was updated in 2010. So I'm assuming I should send it to aem again to get it updated? When did the series 1 come out? Do I need to modify my trailing coil?
