Yea Mahjik, I've read that at least twice now, about the coils being in different places. WHERE, is the big question lol.
Does anyone have a pic of this by any chance? Or can spell it out exactly?

the coils are slighty moved, and the 99 motor has a big metal plate that bolts directly to the top of the motor, then the coils bolt on, then the "black box", if the resistance of the solenoids in the black box are the same as in the 93-95 solenoids then it will work, but japan dosent have egr so that solenoid will be missing (if the usa car has one??) Ill post some pics so you guys can check it out, each solenoid has its own plug, like 93-95, the plugs are just a different shape. here are some pics, sorry there kinda small, i cant post big pics for some reaon.

Michael,
NICE...hopefully this is gonna help. Sidenote: if you want to upload larger pics, make sure you leave the setting on compression level: 6. But if the picture itself is huge, you might have to upgrade your account. I did...it's $3.95 a month, takes MUCH larger pics, max is 60MB a day, etc....so it's not a bad idea at all. (If you don't feel like it, just email me the large pics, The944@aol.com, and I can host 'em on my account).
Here's one of the ones in your album. Can anyone tell me more info from lookin at the pic? hehe (<-----newbie here)

Yep,thats the sucker,and here are the omp,ecu,harness...
i've acctually been working on/fabricating somthing similar to the 99 spec nest. funny thing is, i didn't even know that mazda did this on later models until now. mine is basically just a huge relocation for the original rats nest that makes getting to the solenoids as simple as turning a couple of screws and removing the cover. i figured this would be great since i love the stock sequential turbos but hate having to take off the uim every time i think a solenoid is bad. if anyone wants pics i might be able to get some up.
thank god for this forum, I just bought an engine from japan not knowing it was the 96-02 spec, well im kinda happy that it is but not sure if i could make this work or if its even worth it. THe package came with the 96-02 16 bit ECU, cut japanese wire harness and all the goodies the newer engine has like the famous black box. I cant decide to re wire with the 93-95 harness to it because Im worried theres other things in the engine i should pay attention to since there were quite alot of changes like the oil metering pump, what if it doesnt work at all with the 93-95 harness or even the 93-95 ECU, should i just just use the 16 bit ECU and buy a damn new version harness? Please help with any ideas. Thanks
My personal opinion-experience:Keep the short block with all the goodies (e.g. efini y-pipe),and use the old rats nest with stock ecu or better with a PFC.Its too much hassle to make the black box to work. You can dissasemble the black box,and keep all the solenoids and check valves for spares(the new solenoids can be used with a little ghetto fab).

Does everything work? IE check engine light comes on with the ignition, then turns off? (required for smog check)
I hate to bump this, but I must know. I have a 99 engine and a 93 car. I would love to keep the 99 wiring/sensors/ecu if at all possible. Can it be done? If you have, please, PLEASE post details?

Honestly, with the custom upgrade solonoid sets available, there's really no need to screw with this block and all the wiring... just keep the US spec stuff.
hmmm,
I saw that thread Mahjik.
ptrahan,
I already have a 99+ engine so all I need is a 99+ ECU/ 99+ PFC and maybe extend the wiring. Once I find the correct ECU I'll do a little more experimenting.

I bought a '96 JDM motor for parts recently, and got to go through all the extra stuff.
Really, the black box isn't that great. It's a sealed unit - if one solenoid in there goes bad, you have to pitch the WHOLE thing. Also, the check valves are built in as well - when they go bad (we know how lousy the stock check valves are) once again you have to pitch the black box.
To accomodate the box, Mazda added the plate on top of the motor that everything bolts to, re-did the metal fuel and coolant lines on top of the motor, re-did the turbo's oil feed, altered the coil packs - TONS of stuff.
I just don't see it being worth it. Stock solenoids are the way to go.
