How to tell an aluminum hood from a steel one?...

Just how much lighter is the aluminum hood from the steel one when you lift it up?

I think the FC they just got in my local U-pull-it may or may not have an aluminum hood (it's about the only part of the car that isn't beaten up).

If u got a steel one. Then its much lighter than that. There is a big difference. The magnet thing will work also.

Also the hoop for the hood latch is rivited on the bottom of the hood instead of welded.

It looked like it was bolted on there some how, but I could have sworn my S5's steel hood was the same way.

It felt lighter than my hood, but not by all *that* much... it may very well have been an aluminum one though.

I didn't have a magnet with me to check, though...

Lift the hood. That's all you need to do. The weight difference is incredible.

Heres some pics of what im talking about...

Aluminum hood

Steel hood

These are from two hoods I have. I'm not sure if this rivet thing holds true for all aluminum and steel hoods.

The weight difference is significant. I have 2 aluminum t2 hoods and one NA hood... I can pick these hoods up easily with one hand. The steel NA hood on my car now is a hassle to move by my self.

haha. you guys just make too much sense.

the PINKY TEST

If you can lift the hood with your pinky then it's an aluminum. If your pinky bends significantly then you have a steel hood.

works for me and I have normal sized fingers.

If you fail at this test then do me a favor and stay away from a 7 because it will break down on you and you'll be one of those that will claim the rotary is unreliable.
