I knew of a site called www.7parts.com that use to sell carbon fiber drive shafts. I just checked their site and its under construction. I know Pettit built this car for them http://www.turbomagazine.com/features/0207tur_shape/ and pettit use to have them linked on their page...soooooooo....maybe u can call www.pettitracing.com and see if they can help u out if no one else can. Hope it brings u closer to what ur looking for.

The RX-8 uses a carbon-fiber driveshaft. I don't know if it will fit, though

Hmmm, when did they quote that price to you? I checked with ACPT in November 2004 and they quoted me $960.00 plus shipping and handling (plus sales tax for California), and they told me that in January 2005 the price would increase to over $1,000.00.

ErnieT, please post the quote that you receive.

Mazda advertises carbon fiber, at least for the six speed:

See the attachment. Standard on the 6-speed. N/A on the Automatic

CF isn't going to absorb shock is it? Its very rigid.

Rotary Performance sells a launch kit for drag purposes. It's probably safe to say that this with the addition of the CF DS would greatly improve launches.

better add a Kaaz diff to that list. I was under the impression that a driveshaft wasn't needed until you were making 500hp+. Diff is the weak link is it not? Even replacing the bushings with Delrin won't keep the diff from blowing after a couple high rpm launches.

A carbon fiber drive shaft would be the last thing to replace even for a drag racer. Most just run the stock aluminum which is already strong and light. With a puck or twin plate clutch the dampening effect would be nice and a drive shaft loop may not be required (safer also) but a $1000 is a lot. All these should be upgraded first...

differential bushings
trailing arms or their bushings
puck or multi-plate clutch
chromoly half shafts
lsd (i.e. Kaaz)

Do not run slicks until above are upgraded or you will break things. Drag radials are not as harsh on the drivetrain and the stock lsd and an organic clutch may hold up for awhile with less than 450 HP to the wheels and everything else upgraded. The trick to getting the drivetrain to last is avoiding wheel hop.

Guys,

Ernie isn't new to this stuff:
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/pics-me-%40-track-my-10-sec-pass-128190/

If he's looking for a CF DS, he's probably already done his homework.

Kyle,

Just so YOU know, I didn't think he was, given the fact that he's a Moderator on here. I was just debating with the other guys.

Thanks,
Joe

Last thing?
Given the stock one is strong and light but the U-joints suck. Also for the power ernie is going to be making the stock one wont hold. And if you have ever seen a metal one go compared to a carbon fiber one you'll be thanking your lucky stars. Carbon shafts also hold their shape with tremendously less distortion than metal ones.

I Know ernie has all above mods done, Hees making another beast, This is his second time arround making a monster and will be making a TON of power.

Check it out.

http://www.acpt.com/driveshaft/driveshafts.html

I just bought mine for $900 from James Martin @ ACPT. Very smart guy. Anyhow, to enlighten those of you that don't know. I bought this because I should be in the 650rwhp range and with that kind of power the steel driveshaft vibrates and sends alot of shock to the other drivline componets......ie, input and output shaft, tranny, diff, and knuckles to axles. All of which I've broken...lol.....so Im doing this on a pro-active level. The carbon fiber is supposed to be very good at absorbing shock as well as being able to twist (and unlike steel and aluminum) will go back to shape with no ill-effects. Thus, being the main reason for purchase. When I launch I like to come out at around 9k and drop it!!! Don't want any Supra's hanging around, ya know!
And Yes, I already have the 300m chrome molly axles and kazz.

Good deal Ernie. Looks like the Supra's may have to catch up to ya.

There is a big difference in the shockwave graphs. I was really suprised at just how big the difference is. Look forward to hearing the end result.
