Your spirit driving

How do you spirit drive?

I like to go on these back road about 5 mins from my house and there are rarely any vehicles driving along that road. Basically smooth pavement with nice straight aways and some nice curves. Its pretty much an FD owner's paradise. well any REAL sports car owner with ***** big enough to let your car fly

I pay $165 & get four 30 minutes sessions at Pacific raceway. It's a 2.3 mile 9 turn course. I hit anywhere from 130 to 135 mph down the straight & lap in the high 1:40's to low 1:50's.

I've already been out there 3 times this season & did a session during a heavy rain.

I figure my ***** are plenty big.........................

Not be an insensitive ***, but read about Trev & back road driving.

Find a track; all it takes is another car, animal, tree down,... in the wrong place at the wrong time.

i dont have long spirited drives.. i wish i did..ocassionally when theres no traffic, ill end up taking some empty streets and just ripping it 1st and 2nd just to get that rush out of my system..

but when i go to my friends house and i take the FD, i have to use the highway so thats when i get the rush out of my system completely LOL

My spirited driving usually consists of taking corners at higher speeds, not usually anything above the speed limit really. It's those turns and challenges that warrant a "Warning, 20mph turn" sign that are fun to take at a higher speed. There's this one road to my friends house that is literally up and down a mountain, and I've also been meaning to go to the Hawks Nest (where they film car/truck commercials, windy road with an arial shot).

At the same time I don't go overboard, and don't test the very limits of my car and it's tires.

I don't drive the FD if the driving is going to be "Ho-hum", be it all highway, all trafic, or just to a city block in a bad area...just doesn't make sense to for me *Shrug*.

I'm not an advocate of street racing or anything serious either, I've taken my Fd to the AutoX and am trying to find time for track days.

Spirit is Driving

I have a plastic Jesus glued on my dash, if I go 10mph over the speed limit, my hands magiclly lift from the steering wheel, and that damn Holy Ghost makes my car slow down Maybe I should not have snuck wine from the church when I was an alter boy

I go to the track!

There are exceptions, but I typically do not exceed 6-7/10ths on public roads. Ripping along a back road at 6-7/10ths is a LOT of fun in this car and you still are leaving some safety net to try to avoid the unexpected...

From rynberg "to try to avoid the unexpected..."

Highway 99 in B.C. - the "Duffy Lake road" between Lillooet and Pemberton,
rounding a "slow to 30 km/hr" corner "at speed" (80 km/hr) to find the road covered with nice sharp rocks, some larger than my ground clearance (3.5"). Dang landslides ;-). No damage, I reacted fast enough. That road is a blast - it's a little rough in places, but has little traffic. My pic. was shot at a lookout just past Lillooet on this road. If you use it watch for deer and rocks. Oh, and RVs driven by foreigners (mobile shicanes).

Lets see, HWY 166, or cachuma pass, or basic school road in guadalupe. There's lots of places for me to play around.

I can not tell you how much fun doing a track day is! Did my first one this year at Thunderhill, BEST $186 i've ever spent on my car and myself. Anyone who enjoys using their car for it's intended purpose, and pushing it and yourself should do this. Unforgettable experience that cannot be re-created on the street.
Oh, and hwy 20 from Williams to Ukaia can't be beat when there's no traffic!

i do spirited drives almost everytime i drive the FD. but my 'spirited drive' is a little more toned down then what everyone is describing. i just like to accelerate fairly quick, if not very quickly, to the speed limit posted, or just a bit over it. also taking turns, especially on off and on ramps, a little faster than the average vehicle can handle.

There is nothing that compares to taking your car to a closed course and being free to push it to the limit. For once, you can drive at 10/10ths, knowing that if (or maybe WHEN is a better word) you get in over your head, the only thing you're going to do is spin out or hit some cones. This is why I autocross, even though the speeds aren't as high as track days, it's just you and the course; no excuses or inhibitions.

Off topic but, are you or do you work at the Pearl Harbor base?

I like to take my car out on some nice mountain roads and drive a little faster than I normally would, but I never really push it too hard on the street. Sometimes it is hard to resist opening it up on a nice stretch of deserted highway, but I try to keep most of my high-speed driving at the track.

There is this road in the middle of the forest near by my area that stretches about 2-2 and half miles. There rarely is anybody on this road and it’s about 2 lanes. S-curves you name it it’s a very beautiful road with captivating scenery around it. You would have sworn it was designed for “touge” drivers in Japan. It reminds me very much of “touge”. I use to always take my car there and push it very very hard when my sequential wasn’t working (I couldn’t go fast straight so found my rush other ways lol). I still go there now that it’s fixed but it’s definitely a much different approach with that huge secondary punch and requires more focus. I love the way the RX7 handles its very unique. Those late night uphill and downhill passes always quenched my thirst for being closer to the JDM life. The last time I went I pushed my car a little too hard and entered a pretty scary drift but handled it very well, I won’t lie since then I haven’t gone back. Maybe tommorow night I will reunite. There’s nothing like hearing the turbos spool tires screech and applying true driving skills to the pavement. I think there are a few peeps on this site that watch Options you know where im coming from. Rx7 owners don’t try this at home : )
