A new owners sub-section for each individual generation. Would be so easy for mods to just move posts into those sections.

Not really. The more forums, the less places people go to regularly. Tell me honestly, how many of you would be checking out the Newbie forum to tell them the same answers? Also, the newbies would probably figure they could get better answers by asking questions from the veterans.

I'd like to see a 10day or so waiting period where you are only allowed to search before posting. I think it would help quite a bit.

I think it's down right retarded for people to say it. I mean, it's not like we get PAID to post here. Nobody told us to CLICK the link. If you knew the answer to the newbie type question, there are a few things you could say: 1) Answer the question 2) Tell them to search 3) DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL.

I never get tired of reading about newb problems(best radiator, SMIC vs. FMIC, boost problems, etc.) I only get tired of reading people having NOTHING to add except, "Search you newbie". Seems like all they did was add another number to their post count instead of being helpful.

 

I'm not exactly a "veteran" here and agree w/ jspecracer. There seems to be a core set of members that have nothing positive to say. They're responses add nothing and demonstrate an arrogant and condecending opinion of anyone with less than 5 yrs and 1000 posts. I understand how tiring it might be to answer the same questions, but there are options other than putting some smarmy, wise-*** and demeaning post to something they feel is just beneath them. You know who they are.
In contrast, there are guys, like Mahjik, Kento and (I'm sorry I know I'm forgetting others) that manage to point the newer members in the right direction while still being decent about it.
Fortunately they balance the others out.

 

Think of it as an initiation of education on these cars. If we didn't tell them to search so much we would constantly be answering the same old library of questions. This environment would stifle innovation and ingenuity. Some of us take pride in the fact that we come up with ingenious ways to mod our cars and enjoy sharing it with others.

Ask yourself what type of community do you want, one that covers the same old topics all the time, or one that inspires people to do more with there vehicle. As you ask yourself this, think of what type of environment best accomplishes what you want.

 

Honda-Tech has a period of time before you are able to post.. allowing you to search topics and such. I agree that you shouldn't run down the newbs... people just want answers sometimes and don't know forum etiquette..

The search function should always be the first course of action for anyone.. newb or veteran. I always use search.. if i don't find the answer.. I post. But i'm not knocking anyone who doesn't use the search.. I just think its in benefit of Everyone.

As for which product is better.. that belongs in a different forum...

 

I always find the newbie post useful, usually if you show a newb once they learn how to use it.

Its the whole teaching a man how to fish concept.

 

I don't know about the fish, but I'm all for teaching a man not to ask how much power he'll make or what he should run at the drag strip with "X" mods...

 

I can understand where you're coming from, but honestly, the newbs here are [i]nothing/i] compared to lots of other forums. I used to be extremely active on a few other forums, but ended up spending 75% of my time answering the same three or four basic questions.

If you are going to do one you might as well do three.

1) Post count

2) Thread count

3) Search count

Anyway. Here's my suggestion:

Lead by example

I agree that just posting "Search!" in a message really doesn't help much. This is why I actually post a link or explain why using the search function is handy. Eventually, people get the idea that I'm not doing anything they couldn't do and start using the search function themselves.

Granted, there will always be lazy people who say "I don't fell like searching so just answer my question". In those cases, it doesn't matter what rules we have in place; they are going to do whatever they want.

So, my suggestions:

1. Don't feed the trolls... If someone is just trolling, they are only looking for attention. Don't give it to them by replying to their messages. Ignore them and they will go away.

2. Treat others how you would like to be treated...

3. Ignore threads you don't care about. If you don't care about BOV threads, don't post in them. By posting in threads you don't care about, all you are doing is keeping them on the main page that much longer.

 

If I'm going to feed the bears, I usually tell them what terms I used to search on so that hopefully they get the idea and can get into the garbage cans for themselves after that.

For example, if someone appears especially needy (or especially dense), I'll say something like "search on 'jimlab' for user and 'bushings' for keyword, and you'll find several posts where I explain what the benefits of bushings are, why they don't affect ride harshness, etc." and then provide a link showing that a search using those terms does in fact result in usable information...

However, I have nowhere near the Saint-like patience of Mahjik, so I don't do it all the time. I'd rather crack someone's head open like a rotten coconut, personally...

 

lol, I have a fuse just like anyone else on this forum.. Granted, it may be a little longer than most, but every now and then my fuse does run out.

It wasn't that long ago that I started on this forum and I remember how hard it was to get questions answered as a new member. Because of my past experiences, I think I do tend to pay more attention to the new users as the more experienced members help each other.

The forum is almost "click'ish" when it comes to post count (which is why it would be nice to remove it from the display).

 

That is the BEST advice I've heard about posting in awhile.
