XS Engineering-Tuned RX-7 Detroyed...

...My BPU '03 Cobra. See <http://www.svtperformance.com/forums...&postid=329828>. For those of you who have lined up with an '03 Cobra...

1. What have been the initial results?

You guys mentioned that you would take the hole shot from a 300ZX...

2. Would the same hold true for the Cobra, or would the additional torque compensate? The reason I ask is because the guys at SVTP, as well as myself, have not lined with with many RX-7s.

3. Based on my current RWHP, RWTQ numbers (440, 440 SAE, repectively) and weight (3800 lbs. w/ driver), what kind of RWHP, RWTQ numbers does a 2900 lbs. w/ driver Rex need to pace the '03 through the 1/4?

For the record, I used to troll the streets in a '91 HKS Stage IV MR-2 Turbo and consider the E46 M3 public enemy #1. The Rex is A-OK by me...

most modded 3rd gens will likely weigh around 2700 lbs, btw. I weighed mine last week, 2715 and that included an extra set of carpet (about 20 lbs).

I have watched 03 cobras at the track and most of them ran a 12.9 - 13.3 @ 110-112. Thats stock of course. about 300 RWHP, 250 lbs TQ torque should put it even with a stock cobra.

You can search for NOCAB72 thread, he has a Vid of some freeway races he did with a mid 11 second 450 HP cobra. Wasn't pretty.

With intake, full exhaust and a ecu upgrade with everything else entirely bone stock I ran a 12.3 @ 113 one a set of 225/50/16 Nitto Drag radials with a 1.89 60 foot time.

Welps...the basic advantage goes to the RX-7 simply because of the weight differences.

3800 pounds is practically a good thousand more pounds than a 7...so if an RX-7 is pushing out anywhere near the same amount of horsepower...it's not gonna be pretty.

Got any pics of the Cobra? Love to see it...

Bet you 5 bucks, it was a yellow widebody REbodykited, Killer bee stickered FD owned by Allen ? Yeah, His car is pretty fast, and he only makes 437 on pump....

Oh, and as to off a stoplight, he doesnt have any lag off the line, and most likely pull on you the same amount on or off the freeway......

Node don't be a dick. I read the Cobra thread. It's great to see mature posts. When you get to that level of speed just be a motorhead and respect each other's cars for what they are.

Cobra has a back seat and a trunk. Gobs of torque and a warranty. And stock for stock they'll spank FDs. Don't give me "were faster in the twisties" crap because at that level of handling it is all driver.

1) If the cobra is making 440 rwhp the RX-7 will need to make about 318 rwhp.

2) Bone stock cobras make 360 rwhp. The Rx-7 needs about 260 rwhp to run even. Bone stock RX-7's make about 220 rwhp, not enough to keep up in a drag race.

It's nice to see the owners at the stang board are mature. One of the few ones out there it seems. Nice kill either way, those stangs sure can be quick saw one out at the local track laying waste to those F-body guys.

See <http://araia.net/downloads/pub/cobra/ox03/>. I have yet to post updated pics...

Thanks for the relative comparisons. Time to shed some vehicular weight. Looks as if I will have to aim for the 600/600 club to stay with you guys

Crashunit: It was Allen Chen. He was on his way back from IXS. You win five virtual bucks My cousin was visiting from Dallas, TX, and riding shotgun at the time. He was set on purchasing an '00 M5 as a daily driver. After witnessing the Rex kill firsthand, he opted to buy a beater and mod his '93 RX-7 to hell. Lives about 30 minutes from Rotary Performance, Garland, TX.

Thanks for the informative responses, guys. I will certainly send my cousin your way...

That is a great thread. I guess we're always happy when the RX-7 wins , but thanks for keeping it mature. I hope our forum shows the same maturity with this thread.

The RX-7 you raced was obviously quite modified and well tuned. They all came with the same twin turbo engine, so the R1 or R2 part doesn't really matter. There weren't many differences between the models, and most people with modded cars have changed out the stuff that was different anyway. The stock Cobra is certainly faster than the stock FD, but with mods and good tuning, the RX-7 can be quite fast. It sounds like the Cobra responds well to mods, too, after reading the sigs on the other thread.

My RX-7 weighed 2780 stock with 3/8 tank of fuel, and it is probably at least 100 lbs lighter now with the single turbo and other mods. An RX-7 would need 2900 / 3800 * 440 = 335 RWHP or so to match your HP/weight ratio (including driver). You have a sizable torque advantage, though, so I would expect the RX-7 to need more than that to match the 1/4 mile times. This might be a good time for some CarTest simulations...

RX-7s can be tricky to tune, and as a result many blow the engine or are running at less than 100%. You can make a lot of power with decent reliability if you are careful, though. There are a fair number of people on this board making high 300s to low 400s on pump gas without blowing their engines. I've been running 370 or so for 15K+ miles without blowing the engine, despite some scary moments (failed wastegate -- big overboost) and generally running the car hard (track events, regular street flogging where reasonably safe to do so).

The RX-7 in this test had 380rwhp.

I dont think you are bieng fair to the FD. The massive power and torque of the Cobra is really amazing and without a doubt the thing that sets the cobra apart from other stock cars. The RX-7's suspension and handling attributes do the same for the 7. I dont have to give you the links to the SCCA, that shows it still in the Super Stock catagory after all these years , you already know that. The fact of the matter is on anything other than acceleration a stock RX7 with equal drivers will spank an 03 cobra. I think the FD should get the Respect it deserves without bringing up "Its the driver that makes the difference".

The fact is at the drag strip its the DRIVER that makes the difference too. Thats not to say that I'm saying that an 03 cobra and stock FD will come down to the driver, i'd think the driver would have to be pretty bad in the cobra to lose to a stock FD. I'm just making a point.

I actually like ford for stepping in when mazda was in big trouble and staying out of rotary development. While mustangs are not my exact style, the GT looks decent compared to some of the tanks made by GM.

Later.

??????????????????????????????????/
WHAT?
Saleens are typically slower than Cobra's. The only real fast Saleen was the 351SC which I don't think they even make anymore.
The only 1/2 *** fast Saleen is the SC GT Saleen's and they aren't that fast.
The 03 cobras stock will DESTROY any Saleen other than the 351SC and pretty much all Saleen's will run you damn near 50K.

damn Cobalt beat me to it, we usually have some fun discussing Mustang specs.

But yeah my friends STOCK 01 Cobra would take down 281 and S281 Saleens. He pulled an S281 hard on the highway. Bottom line, Saleen's use GT motors which are basically crap aside from the 351 Windsor motor which they don't make anymore.

a 2003 blown Cobra will absolutely destroy any Saleen produced today and only cost around mid 30s.

my final analysis Cobra>Saleen hands down.

You should do a search on Mustangs and see how immature most RX-7 owners are when it comes to talking about them. I read more trash talk by 7 owners on this board about mustangs than I ever do on the Mustang Boards and LS1 boards about 7's. Sure it happens but it runs rampent here.
