X-20 and x-21 connectors

These are the door harness connectors. I have disconnected/connected every other connector in an FD except these two. And I am having a time getting them apart. Surely the Mazda engineers meant for the male side of the dash harness at X-20 to plug into the door harness from the inside ( thru that access hole ) - well I want to take the dash harness out and I cannot unplug these two door harnesses in order to remove it. I would not think the door has to be removed, then the rubber grommet removed and taken apart that way. I have seen the drawing on page S-8 and that makes it look like what I'm saying, it should come apart from the inside of the car, and a female left intact on the door side.

For those who have taken this connector male/female apart - how does it unlatch ?
Thanks, Tom

You do have to take it apart at the door jamb. Pull the rubber around the connector on the frame (not door) side off. Under the rubber, you'll see the white connectors and a red tab. Slide the red tab back towards the door, it may totally come out. Then, you should be able to unplug the two connectors. You won't have enough clearance to unplug the connector, but if you close the door slightly you'll get enough room.

With it unplugged, you'll easily be able to pull that connector into the car.

I believe when I disconnected it to run speaker wiring I did it from the outside, not through the access hole. Just pull back the rubber tube (at the end closest to the body) and you should be able to get it. However, I remember having to give it a good tug to get it to come loose.

Red Tab? Yeah I think I broke that when I removed mine. I guess I pulled too hard. Make sure you get that.

BTW, most 90s Mazdas used that same connector. I found a good one on a 626 or something at the junkyard - handy if you lose or break the tab. I eventually plan on pulling pins out of the spare connector for a cleaner install of my keyless entry.

That is what I needed to know. Yea I saw the red tab and have seen it used on other connectors. I just dodn't think engineers designed it to come apart like that.

Thanks, Tom
