what should the vacuum be around? I'm getting around 15mm/Hg (<?) on my new engine

Vacuum really depends from gauge to gauge. 15 is probably the low end of what I would consider normal for an unported engine, however you can get vacuum leaks from a variety of places that will lower the value even if the engine is sealing perfectly. I see you have a mild streetport, this will also lower your values, depending on how mild it is, the bigger the port, the worse the vacuum. I wouldn't worry. Also, you may find that compression and vacuum goes up as the engine wears in. Some people have reported not reaching maximum compression until as high as 10k miles, although this is an extremity from what I've heard.
