WTF is up with the Price on the 3rd Gen?

Ive been trying to sell my dad's 3rd gen for 13,500 to no avail. Then 12,000 to no avail. What is up !? 59,000 Original Miles and no one will touch it for 12k?!
Just a little frustrated but w/e if push comes to shove looks like we may keep it up.

well where are you and what does the car have? any mods? manual?

Seems crazy -- FD's are in a slum right now it seems... I picked mine up for 13.5 with 58k. The Supra hasnt budged at all though. I'm glad they are so expensive, that is what kept me from buying one and getting the FD.

I thought they'd be getting rare with the amount of people crashing them.

I think it's more a symptom of the economy people are feeling right now than anything else. If I had 13k to spend on an FD I'd love to buy yours. Unfonrtunately I don't so I found a project FD for $3500 that will take me quite some time to assemble. And I will be quite lucky to get it completed for less than the cost of yours. It's all timing - I wanted an FD NOW, so I got what I could afford. I'm very bad about saving, so I doubt I'd have the cash next year even if you still had it for that price or less. And I'm sure a lot of people are like me.

I keep hearing this crap about a bad economy, and I live in the "disapearing" middle class and I dont see it. My dads not making MAD money, but were getting by, and my job is getting more and more purchase orders. *sigh* think I should wait or will the price drop more?

whats up with the fd price?

look at the rx8 and the upcoming lineup for mazda associated with mazdaspeed..even though its technically not in conjunction with the rx series, its something that was eventually replaced..

look at the MKIV, look at its value, know why its so high? whats "supposedly" replacing it? nothing, well nothing in the near future, it holds its "rareness", and since more and more people want it, it leads to higher tags..

The problem is, it's becoming a "nitch" car. The people that want to buy it are young kids who loved the Fast & the Furious movie, however, they don't have cash to buy them (and generally parents don't want their young drivers flying around in sports cars so they won't help). Most older people will just spend the money and get a Vette.

Add in the fact that everyone knows what a pain in the **** these cars can be and that means you won't have people beating down your door everyday for a sale. You'll just have to be patient.

It's a complex car that is 10+ years old. of course it's going to keep getting cheaper. Just like the other 99.9% of 10 year old cars on the planet...

It will be 2005 in a few months and that'll mean most FDs will be 12 years old.

There are a lot of cheap late-model Japanese cars out there in the FD price range now. A 2002 WRX is about the same price of an FD nowadays. A 2000 S2k is about the price of a nice FD with a rebuilt engine and mods. Of course an FD is more sporty than a stock WRX, but a lot of buyers look at alternatives for their money, and there seem to be some desirable alternatives.

The Supras value holds because it has a very reliable engine that can handle 500hp with no internal engine modifications. They are considered to be more upscale, also.

I'm not bashing the FD, I'm saving my money for one someday, but you have to keep in mind that it is a 12 year old car now that has the stigma of being unreliable.

Who buys an FD just before winter??

One thing to keep in mind is that all sports car sales take a hit as A) winter approaches, and B) new models arrive in dealerships in the fall. You're trying to sell at the wrong time of year. Wait until next spring.

I got my FD two years ago for $7500 in good running order, no mods. The owner had been trying to sell for a month at more like 13K with no avail. He had to sell by the next day and I knew it. Got a steal.

Coming from a guy who just sold a 93 w/58K miles on it for $15K, the first two people that looked at it wanted to buy it here are some thoughts.

The pics on Ebay aren't great. They are dark and could easily hide damage. If it was just buffed take some pics that show the gloss of the paint, after all people are judging the car based on your written word and the pics. Pics like this one are even less flattering:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2491936651

Another issue that would SERIOUSLY deter any prospective buyer is that the odometer doesn't work. 58K miles but it has a different speedo in it. Who knows how many miles it really has? Did the owner stop driving it the instant the old odo quit working, did you buy it that way?

I'm not accusing you of fraud at all, I'm just pointing out why I think it isn't selling. How does a Carfax look on it? Is the mileage/date history consistant with your story?

I guess I would have to do a carfax to find out. The odometer I still have it, it wasnt working and I replaced it. If anyone knows an electronics person that I can show it to, let me know so I can fix it. Thanks for the tips Jeff.

I accept their getting cheaper but what I dont accept is the rarity in condition and mileage and I even used the Blue Book Average , and I still couldnt. I guess a bit more show and maybe take Jeffs Advice.
