WTF Pettit trying to charge me 6k for a rebuild

I called them last week to get a quote for an engine rebuild. The guy I talked to didnt know **** about 7's. He must of been new or something. Anyway he said he would fax me an estimate. I got it and it says 6,000 for a streetport. Now is it just me or is that a wee bit spendy? Or should I just call them back an say thats way too much damn money? Anyone wiith any connections there wanna try an hook me up with a deal? Ryan ( rx7even ) I know you maybe could pull some strings

Thanks,
Mike

Sounds way too much. Unless you wanted a fully race-prepared engine.

For R and R with streetport and a few upgrades above stock, you can get one for around 3700.

Was that a drop-off and pickup price? Probably. If so, that's about right with all the labor.

yeah true, like lost time said, the dealer would charge you 4000-450 for you dropping it off any picking it up with a new engie. Pettits engines about 1500 to 2k more to the engine alone and i bet they know a hell of alot more also.

Well, their engine prices are right on their site
http://www.pettitracing.com/Frames/h...t.html#engines

and it does not specify installation charge.....

Take it from someone who lives ten minutes from them. The price on the site DOES NOT include installation.

It better be gold plated. My out-the-door price for a reman, taken appart, polished, ported, balanced, blueprinted, w/ reliability mods, and R&R @ KD rotary was about $4300 or so.

figure a reman (most have new parts anymore) is only a hair under 2k... R&R is 1k... where's your extra 3k going?

....to pay for Pettit's mortgage, electric, Cam's home, etc. Just because KD can do it for one price doesn't mean Pettit has to match it. $5500+ is what Pettit gets for in/out street-ports.

Kd also has a LOT of states around him. Pettit's main customers come out of the deep south. It's all about location as to why they have such different pricing.

Then again, I've never heard of someone blowing their Pettit rebuild....

Not to mention you're paying for the name. Pettit is known the world over, KD isn't.

wouldn't it depend on exactly what you're getting for 6k? like new housing, new rotors, etc.?

Pettit usually figures $500 worth of new rotor housings in that price. They almost ALWAYS replace them.

New Rotor Housings
New Rotors
New Stationary Gears
New Oil Pump and Chain
New Eccentric Shaft
New Side Housings
New Lapped Side Housings

what should this run if you guys think it's too expensive?

Yep, they're charging you almost 2k for the labor. Not to mention tax which isn't cheap on 5grand.

My reman had brand new rotor housings (and most everything else) already. They do so many now, they are using alot of new parts. Sure, if you buy all new parts to build a motor, it'll be about 6k... but we were talking about a "rebuild".

Also, if that includes 3mm seals (which you likely don't need) that could be the difference right there.

Does anybody know if it is cheaper to rebuild before the engine blows, I would think so. If it is about how much cheaper?

Not much cheaper. The only difference would be a few hundred (if that) depending on the parts that didn't need to be replaced.

That is unless your apex seal takes your turbos out with it.

how does dave do it so cheap? once he opens up the reman to port it, doesn't he have to replace about a grand worth of gaskets and seals? 6k is not too out there for a rebuild w/ new housings.

5 grand is not cheap if he pulls the engine and drops it in himself. shops usually charge about $1500 for that, so that's a total of 6.5k.
