Would you mount an Aftermarket Head unit on Top of a R1 Push pocket or below it??
I'm about to install a Blaupunkt Honolulu along with an R1 Push pocket compartment. Should I install the Radio on top of the pocket of have the pocket on top of the Radio??? I've seen it done both ways. BTW, if anyone can shed some light on installing an aftermarket head unit using the bose speakers please feel free to post some tips So far the stock radio and CD player are out and I see two harnesses with connectors and one antenna wire on the right side. I am just waiting on my Bose Converter/Harness and antenna adapter that I odered from Crutchfield. Does this Crutchfield converter/harness just plug into the existing Bose harness?? I know that I will have to run the amp power wire to the ignition bec. the harness doens't have a wire for that. Any other tips?? Thank you !!

R1 push pocket?
I bought the Sony CDX-m620 so I put it on top-was afraid the flipping faceplate would get in the way of my shifting, if it was open.
I left the pushpocket out (Rotary rocket dude, don't worry-I haven't forgotten about sending it to you) and am planning to put in the Saab 3-gauge faceplate and some temp gauges down there.
I would think that if you are swapping cd's-you'd want the cd slot to clear the top of your shift ****.
BTW-make sure the depth of your head unit fits. Mine is a *TIGHT* squeeze and i had to manually route (shove my hand down in the lower hole and poke around) the wires and harness for the stereo for it to settle in.

BTW, I wanted a head unit that matched the stock set up. I found a Blaupunkt Honolulu Flip down detachable face. It was originally $299. but found it on the net for only $148!! just in case you may be interested. It's a 2000 model I believe. Anyway...it has the same color LCD's and an EQ as well.

Does Mazda still sell the push pocket? I went in a couple months ago and the guy at the counter couldn't find it on the micro-fiche.
Otherwise, I was thinking of leaving the stock radio/cassette unconnected and replace the cd player unit with an aftermarket like the JVC Kameleon. That way when potential thieves look in my car they will only see the stock radio and hopefully not notice the hidden JVC.
Any thoughts???

You can still get push kits from a lot of manufacturers if MAzda doesnt have it anymore.
I've seen PLENTY of Taurass with them. It's black and it would look perfect. ALL it is is a DIN sized pocket with a flap door.

I chose to mount my stereo on the bottom only because I had poor visibility of my additional gauges, especially in 3rd and 5th and at night time. With the R1 pocket though I would install it on the bottom since you don't need to look at it, and install the stereo on top for better access/visibilty.
