Working under car

Hey, what precautions (if any) do you guys reccommend for working under your car when the front end is up on jackstands? I have my FD in my garage with the front end up high enough so that the front tires are about 3 inches off the ground, and I'm thinking about a little higher. E-brake is set and rear wheels are chocked. Is it safe to go underneath the car to get work done like that? All the jacks and jackstands say NEVER to do it, but I have work I really really need to get done, and ramps aren't high enough for me.

Thanks

Just make sure you have a good secure mounting spot and you should be fine. The jack stands say that to cover themselves. The best bet is to totally put the car in the air on 4 jack stands and level it off.

I've done work like this on many occasions. Just be sure the weight on the jackstands is well centered.

If you're worried about a potential accident, take off the front wheels and set them under the frame rails. Or leave the wheels on, and stack 2x10s planks up underneath the wheels.

Or, put the jack back under the crossmember and pump it up to a light pressure so it's touching but not taking much load. This will not wear on the jack since it's at low pressure, but it would be some sort of safety in case a jack stand kicked out. This is what I would do.

Use common sense, and you'll be fine.

You should be fine, especially with the rear wheels chocked up. If you want to be extra safe, just leave the jack set up under the car as a back up.
