Work done but now no A/C AND idle bounces down to 4700

So I had some work done and a solenoid was replaced re a secondary boost problem.

Now when I engage the clutch and come to a stop my revs drop as low as 4700. My idle is also very rough and I get a pulsating idle (which sounds terrible).

And...my A/C is not giving me any cold air. The compressor is going on and the A/C light comes on but no cold air. The A/C was used and was ok the day that the car was taken to the shop.

What could the problem be and could the 2 issues be related?

Everything was fine before I took it in!!!

Thanks.

I might be stating the obvios here, but isnt 4700 rpm a bit high for idle?

I know exactly what this is. In back of the UIM there is a white plug which plugs up to a fitting. Make sure it's plugged in. I'm not sure how it deals with the AC, but it does. I had the same symthoms. Good luck.

Have you checked that white plug yet. It's easy to check and you don't have to take anything out. Open the hood and look behind the UIM next to the firewall. Right in the middle there is a plug. Check if it's hooked on or check to see if the wires where sliced. I'm pretty sure this is your problem. Your welcome.

Yeah an you may wanna check the map sensor too, No joke. Its the lille hose that goes from the UIM to the driver side of the firewall, It might say boost sensor on it, Just make sure that is hooked up and the filter/check valve on it is facing the right way.

Here is the scoop.

I have been told that the A/C wasn't touched and that lil white plug is fine. The mechanic seemed to know about that plug and he checked it.

So I will have to get the A/C tested and they didn't have the equipment there so that will be a next step.

As for the idling - they turned up the idle and so far it hasn't dropped too low. But...the pulsating idle sound has diminished only by a factor of 1/2. I can still hear it!

I have been told that it is the TPS (or was it TPR) (?) and that I may as well live with it.

I am going to do a fabled "search" and try and see what if anything I should do or not do at this point.

Hey Kath,

Looking back at your original post, you took the car in for a secondary boost problem. Everything else was fine. I know this is gonna be a hard sell to your mechanic, but I still think they have a bad connection somewhere with one of your hoses. Maybe you could get in there and look around? Spraying carb cleaner in small amounts at localized areas is also a good way to check for leaks ( idle will change as cleaner enters combustion chamber ).

How well respected is this place? They do not have the equipment to diagnose air conditioning systems

Keep us up to date. Tom

Hey Kathryn,

What's the latest on this? Did you get the idle fixed? Tom

Hi!

Not yet! Why does my car seem to be an ongoing project?

My A/C is still out and looks like I may get into the "retrofit" issue so I am in the middle of picking a shop that can test and fix AND try and work it through my after-mkt repair insurance. So that is keeping me busy.

On the positive side of things I got a set of used scuff plates off the Forum and am in the middle of polishing, polishing, polishing. So much work but soooooo rewarding. Look mint now. YEA!

Cool about the scuff plates!! Understand about searching for a shop. Please let us know what they find out.

First line of your reply made me GRIN!! Hang in there, these cars are worth it. Tom

Update

Ok - a/c is now fixed. Believe it or not it was only the fuse. So I guess that is great news.

But the idle gremlins..which had for a time fallen silent...are now back.

Idle seemed fine for a while after the guy adjusted the idle by simply turning it up. Today I was running her on the highway and pulled off to stop and her idle was going nutso again. Fluctuation from maybe 800-1200 up and down.

I checked the MAP sensor for loose hoses and all connections seem to be ok.

I will have somebody check for a vacuum problem as you said Tom but why on earth would a problem get fixed and then reappear for no apparent reason?

Does resetting the ecu come into play here? I have never done this but have seen this recommended in a post or two.

Thanks.

Hey Kath,

Wow! Only a fuse?? That's great news. As far as the pulsating idle goes- seems like I read here somewhere that adjusting the idle speed is NOT the way to go. It only masks the real problem. Resetting ECU- not a bad idea, but I'll bet you a Cabernet it's not going fix the pulsating. Hmmm..... why not get in there and do the vacuum line replacement? You need to do that anyway; right? I still say mystery vacuum leak. Tom
