why not use a GM T56 6spd tranny? they're bigger heavier, but they're very strong and the chevy V8 guys even talk about how strong they are.

has anyone used one of these?

Sure, but part of the original question is what trannys "bolt up".

Only the FD tranny bolts up. Everything else requires something to account for the PPF, shifter, or bellhousing pattern.

What's the 3rd rule?

T56's are great for handeling power but they shift like a truck and from what I've researched, don't tolerate high RPM shifting at all. As a matter of fact, my Jeep with 140k on the clock shifts better.

There is a "kit" in the 20B section floating around and FD Newbie is starting or has started a GB on it that adapts the Getrag V161 & V160 to the 13B. However, @ around $5k+ after all is said and done.... no thanks. I want closer gears, but not that much. The torque I expect to make should not flex cases and explode trannies that way so I'll stick to my original plan and use the FE tranny.

I read that too, and figured he'd just be waiting a long time is all.

HKS and GReddy both, atleast in the Japanese Market, sell 6 speed gearboxes, in normal 6 speed and Sequential 6 Speed, but the price for the tranny, atleast new, is about... 12k i think somewhere in that range? which is ridiculous. better to stick with the stock 5 speed.

my buddy's ls1 FD shifts just fine. the t56 isnt quite as smooth as a rx7 or miata tranny, but it still shifts fine.

I had a boosted RX8 with the a ported renesis pushing about 300hp or more (dont recall tq #) and never had any problems with the tranny. I ran it hard 3 days out the week and used it as my dd. To say its stronger than the FD tranny, I wouldnt think so. I liked they ratios on the 8 but using them with the FD's 13B, I'd have to try drive it b4 I had any real comment on its capability.

Nice - that's what I like to hear

I want the closer ratios in the trans so I can stay WELL above the transition without having to bounce a stock internal'ed engine off the rev limiter nearly each and every time, moreso in the lower gears. I deally though I wish it had a better overdrive.... Let me find a graph I made of the FE vs the S5/6 trans assuming a 7800 RPM shift point..

EDIT - Found FWIW the imported turbo tranny I have for my FC has the IDENTICAL overdrive so this trans is a huge advantage to me.

I'm pretty sure the FD with RX-8 box is real and not a fake. I've seen it go up the strip here in the UK and its quick. I'm still not sure of the RX-8 boxes power handeling though, so even if it can be made to fit it doesn't mean it'll last.

another big problem is that the rx8 speedo is conrtolled by the abs system not off the trans. in an FD you would not have a speedo.
