What new cars don't use air pumps? Most/all that I have seen use them. pfc is an Apexi PowerFC Standalone ECU. I've heard that metallic core cats can run without an airpump, but I don't see how.

You can do what you want but the law is the final say.
California is particularly watchful for out-of-state plates, particularly ones that aren't nearby states, because the emissions laws are so tough here they expect people to try and avoid them. A friend of mine's husband works patrol for CHP and she told me that he says they're specifically told to target registration violations because "they" make money off of them, not speeding citations. (I'm not sure what she meant by that and she's a girl so I didn't have her elaborate.)

ok so how can I pass the smog test "the legal way? any suggestions? My car runs fine/normal but it has a strong gas smell from exhaust (bad for smog I know) but no smoke out of the tail pipe at all. I think the reason is because my air pump is currently not working but its definitley there. What should I do?

The Airpump in my S/C C5 isn't hooked up though it's still there, and it doesn't pass visuals(among other things that are not legal), and I need a hook-up to look the other way. Fortunetly the car passes the sniffer just fine.
