Will FD prices go down once the RX-8 arrives?

I wanna buy an FD this summer but it'll be unlikely unless the price goes down. I know that 2 Fast 2 Furious will cause a slight increse in price, but the competition from the RX-8 should drop prices, right? I thought that the prices for FD's are elevated becuase there are so few of them and no competitors in production. Other cars that are just as old have a lower resale value.

since they are not really competing cars, i don't think that the release of the RX-8 will have any change RX-7 value.

No Is the answer. Does a '51 classic corvette price drop because a 2004 is released? No because they are still 2 different cars. In our case the RX-8 is a different car (sports coupe??) intended for a different market than the RX-7. The RX-7 prices will steadly climb if it is deemed a wanted vehicle. Simple case of supply vs. demand.

i agree with you. i think the rx-8 is being marketed for a wider range of people than the FD was.

Reading up on the RX8 in the latest review in Road and Track tells me it isn't the car the FD is. It is a great car, but until Mazda makes a faster version of it I don't think the FDs value will be hurt.

A 10 yr stock FD smokes the RX8

Yea that mazdaspeed rx-8 is killer. I think that thing is rather sexy. Too bad the trunk is only 8cf, hah. You can't fit anything in there except maybe 2 pieces of lugguage.

Hey ttb, I don't tread on that lightly . I see this because anybody who own a rotary engine shouldn't be 'normal' in the 1st place! So hah!

FDs are not collector cars, they are used cars. They will continue to get cheaper regardless.

I think now is a great time to buy an FD. There are a lot of them for sale and the demand isn't what it was a year ago. Wait until after Fast and Furious 2 comes out. Every kid will want one then.

I'm still waiting for the day all the kids kill their FDs.

Then there will be like 100 FDs in the US. Most more than likely belonging to hardcore FD owners. And when one of us takes it out into the streets, everyone even with an RX-8 will be like "DAUUUM! That must be the new RX-9"

I don't see the FD's value going straight down once the RX-8 hits the streets. People looking for an RX-8 are NOT the same people looking for FDs.

That's not totally true. I find that comparable stock (or nearly stock) FDs today are selling for 25-40% more than I paid for mine over 4 years ago (which was a good deal at the time, but not a "steal" ... and no I mine didn't/doesn't have irregularly low miles). My car would sell for that same range if it was stock. They're not exploding in value by any means, but I have definitely seen the market price for them shift upwards.

One of the main characters is supposed to drive and FD in Fast & The Furious 2. I think it was written up in one of the major import mags. I think they will decrease regardless. As damonB said to most people it is just a used car that will only accumulate more miles.

IMO, the FD will continue to increase in value going forward, especially a stock unit. The modified ones will hold their value to some extent, but will only increase if returnable to stock. Doubt if they'll ever reach the stratospheric values of the Ferraris, but will be relatively valuable.

A couple of years ago, the NY Times cited the FD as the collectible car of the '90s. It was recently cited within the top 40 collectibles by one of the business rags, forget which one. Most of us never thought we'd see the day when a Japanese car would be so selected, but looks like the time is here.

holy crap, how low can the prices go??? I have seen them at 6-10k right now and expensive is like 13k! I wonder if they will ever go for 1-2k (haha even FC's aren't this cheap but perhaps FD's will be in 1 or 2 years though...)

I definitely think that the FDs value will go down but slowly like it has been. I agree with DK, I bought my 93 stock for $16,900 in 1998 with 61K miles - I have 81K miles now and know I could sell it for close to that (if it were stock) Mods don't necessarily add value but if someone is looking for a car with new engine/turbos which a stock FD will eventually need since most are abused, then it adds to the value.

Agreeing with the above posts, the RX8 is not a RX7 and will never be. The FD is the only car that is still better looking than most new cars and is 10 years old. I can't remember a Japanese car that has had so much impact over such a long period of time.

The 8 won't compete with the 7, I think prices of pristine 7's will go up.

Man, you need a reality check. Go to autotrader.com and do a search for 94 & 95 7's. Average price is lots more than 6-10k. Junk will always sell for nothing. A pristine, cared for 7 will hold its value. This is not a popular comment on this forum, but I think that mods actually will kill the value in years to come. My advice build an fd to race and mod, and a pristine stock one to keep and appreciate.
