Widest Tires

I tried the Search function, but I didn't really get the answer I was looking for. I just got a set of 4 RX7 rims from my friend. I'm planning on mounting slicks on one pair, and drag radials on the other pair. I drive a Supra and my stock wheels have 245/40/17 in the front and 285/40/17 on at the back. I will be running the lighter RX7 rims in the back with my stock Supra rims in the front for the track. I know it won't look right, but the weight saved would really help. (1 Rear Supra wheel=46lbs). I also know that my back wheels are wider than RX7's, but they came with 265s on them stock, not 285s. I'm hoping I could fit 265s on the RX7 rims.

Questions:

What are the widest drag radials I can fit on the rims? I'm hoping at least 255's.

What sidewall number would you recommend to make up for the 1" rim difference? 255/??/16

Does anyone have racing slicks mounted on the stock rims, which ones did you get? I'm really leaning toward just getting slicks and forgetting about drag radials.

Thanks for all you help guys!

I don't think you can fit 255's on a stock FD rim. If you could, why? You have 285's out back...that's 3 centimeters more traction PER tire

Because:

One RX7 rim weighs only 16lbs compared to 30lbs for a Supra rim. That's 28 lbs saved for both sides. Not to mention it's rotational mass.

The stock tires were only 255 wide to begin with.

255 wide drag radial tires and any kind of racing slicks have a lot more grip than any performance tire eventhough they could be 3cm less.

Did I mention my stock tires only came with 255, not 285 on?

So, lighter rims + better gripping slicks= faster

The fd rim is 8" wide and i have 255's bfg drag radials on them. The widest tire you can mount on the rims is a 275 drag radial, but i'm not sure if they make that size in a 16". Why dont you just buy a set of Drag lite rims from Summit.
