personally i believe people race from a roll is because they cant launch. the majority of the people out their cant launch their cars to its potential.

In my opinion the only reason anyone races from a roll and not dead dig is because they cant drive.. many will call me stupid and say turbo lag and such.. I had a raceport t78/t88h hotside car.. dont tell me its turbo lag.. I always raced from dead dig.. its just knowing how to drive.

i agree with godzilla t78 i like to race from a start because its just more fun..plus you need skills, anybody can just downshift and floor the gas pedal...but launching a car the correct way requires a good skilled driver...plus even thou you have a slower car if you know how to launch and drive you can win the race..in my book car does matter but "its all about the driver"

Supras are not as scarry as lead to believe. My best friend has a 94 tt BPU (intake, Turbo back exhaust, 4-row, boost controller) and I will roll right with him till about 100 mph and then he slowly walks me. I have just a DP,CB, Intakes, and a Power FC for straightline performance mods. His car is no slouch either, he rolled 400 whp at the dyno. I know each dyno is different, but still that is a respectable #. So don't fear the Supras, not all have a Single turbo under the hood.

Second, don't fear the AWD launch, most people can't get it right. I have a WRX for the winter that just happens to have a VF-30 turbo upgrade (dynoed 272 AWHP) and it's still a bitch to launch. With a good tire on it, I have to drop the clutch over 6000 rpms or it will just buck off the line. There is just not enough torque yet (no boost on the line) to spin all four tires. It took me quite a while to get it right, and still I get nervous on the line with the AWD. Too many friends of mine blew their trannies on the line, I don't wan't to be one of them. I did get it right and can now run 12.8 consistantly at 105mph. yeah I know a slow speed compared to the FD, but it's still a twelve.

X...

and because they don't want to blow rear ends... and because they don't want to bother launching agianst the tubbed full slick drag cars that roll around the streets. it's hardly stacking odds in your favor but it's skipping the weak point of the FD.

or simply because you don't like replacing clutches, cracking flywheels due to heat stress, and replacing tires every 2 months. not to mention po-po hears a spinning tire from 3 counties away.

i race from both and know how to launch my FD (at least as well or better than 90% of people) and would rather race from a roll every time, it's just easier on the car.

No ****.. That's partly do to the fact that for some the FD is their first car..

The kinda people who get the car sideways, have a heart attack, and then post about how they "almost wrecked their FD" the next day... Or actually succeded in doing so.. But I wouldn't want to turn this into an age thing so I'll stop my rant.

i would prefer to race from a roll as it takes the driver out of the equation a bit more. Try to launch a 350 rwhp fd on the road with street tires...it sucks. punch the cat at 40 mph and you will see what car is faster.

just cause a guy could launch a car doesnt make him a good driver. i could launch my car...but cant drive my car to its potential on the track...not even close.

I believe its more due to traction, and power actually pushing the car foward than AWD in itself. Splitting the torque between the four wheels gives them a better chance of putting them to the ground without wheelspin, but if the same force could be applied to two rear wheels with good tires, traction, and a driver, you could launch just as well too. I'd say the splitting of torque quality of AWD loses its advantage in anything more than a sprint as far as straight line races are concerned.

yep just go read on the WRX forums, if they are being honest they will tell you that AWD actually hurts performance after a certain speed. i think it has to do with driveline friction/power loss(cause by more rotational resistance), but no1 quote me on that.

I spanked many highly modded TSI's and GSX's back in the day with my highly modded MR2 turbo and yes I would beat them across the intersection. It takes practice and knowing your car. Rear weight bias also helped I'm sure.

Yes you do have more drivetrain loss with all wheel drive.

Okay.... so people race from a roll to same parts and not break things, thats the basis of whats going on. But for those people who race from a dead stop, what kind of suspension upgrades to you have. I plan on running BFG Comp TA's all the time. So the tire should be alright I guess, but what can I do to my suspension to make it sit down and hook. Coilovers? Toe links and such?

Thanks for all the responses....

I will be runnin a GT40R, Ported engine, greedy 3 row, and necessary fuel mods. So there will be plenty of power

Yea, perhaps my statement read wrong but I meant AWD definitely helps in launching from a stop (As is the discussion). As far as power/speed/fun, I don't like AWD at all.

The GTR sports both in a sense, only AWD when it needs to be, which I think is great.
