Why? No BOV, No boost, but lots of vacuum....

I am so frustrated with my FD. I'm finally getting around working on this project but it seems like if a do something great to add on to the car, it takes me 3 steps back instead of forward. Recently, I added an upgraded ECU and hard intake pipes, as well as hooked up my boost guage the correct way. At least now I can read my vacuum. First couple of times I took her out, everthing was great. I was boosting and pulling hard. I had a grin from ear to ear. My friend with a turbo MR2 passed by to see if we could have fun with our cars, I obliged but I had to head back home because I HAD NO BOOST...Primary or Secondary. I shut it down in a parking lot nearby. I started back up again, my vacuum pressure went from 16-17 to like 10. Also, on my way home, it boosted fine again.

Symptoms

- My vacuum is usually around 16-17Hg. I dont know if it's normal but sometimes it his the 20's. I found why I was getting 10 Hg the other day. The hose I had connected to from the boost guage to the manifold erupted. I replaced that. Now I am back to 16-17hg again

- At WOT, boost guage shoots up from 16-17hg and sticks at 0 psi. Sometimes, it hits 1-3 psi, but I have to bring it to 5k rpm. No secondary boost.

- I can hear a lot of air sucking in but no BOV noises like I'm used to. No WAAAAPISH!!! hehehe.

- Weird part...I hear, I can't determine yet if it is a blowing or a sucking sound coming from the driver side. It's a weird noise that I haven't heard before.

I am going to inspect my intercooler hoses, even though I just replaced my couplers with silicone. I am also going back to my black accordian intake pipes. Anything else? The vacuum lines? Ahhh! I just want to drive! Lately, I have been spending more time fixing than having fun. I love my FD but it gets old after a while.

The car never makes an air sucking sound.
Normally you hear the turbos whine and the exhaust.

Most likely you have a blown turbo hose some where. Have checked all your hoses again?

Just like you new cheap boost gauge hose that erupted.
"The hose I had connected to from the boost guage to the manifold erupted".

How does a new hose erupt? Buying stuff from WallMart again are your or was that from Pick-A-Part?

dude, i had the same symptoms after installing my y-pipe; it was one of my intercooler pipes, that i hadn't clamped down. like you said in your original post, check all your couplers and lines to make sure they are attached. good luck! hopefully it is something that simple.

That's very funny! Ha Ha!

"Just like you new cheap boost gauge hose that erupted."
"The hose I had connected to from the boost guage to the manifold erupted".

It was split at the nipple on the manifold. Baker Precision hoses should be good right?

Thanks,
Jason

Is your BOV vented to the atmosphere or the airbox?

From a stop at WOT your boost gauge is supposed to shoot to 0psi and then build 10lbs of boost by 3000rpms. 16-17inHg is a good number for idle, but you get that reading only if the throttle is closed. This is because the engine is sucking air, but since the throttle is closed it creates a strong vacuum in the UIM. As soon as you open the throttle the vacuum is equalized with ambient pressure (0psi).

Classic symptoms of a major Boost leak. Definitely check for a split or loose IC hose. May be even a cracked Cross-over tube. Good Luck.

Vented to the Airbox..I think.

I have it hooked on my Apexi Intake then routed back into the turbo. I guess that is equivalent to the airbox.

You are exactly correct. 2 Weeks ago. It went from 16-17hg went to 0hg then it was hitting 10-12 psi..BOV releases excess. Then 0psi to 8psi, BOV, then back to 10-12psi.

Now it's 16-17hg to 0psi then back to 16-17hg. Sucks man. Weekend rolls around and I'm wrenching instead of driving. You know....I bought my FD 3 years ago and I have driven it a total of 16k miles. 70% of that was my ex-wife's miles.

My local Mitsu dealer offered me an EVO to trade for the FD. I was totally thinking about it but I am not feeling the EVO at all. Even an STI. I bitch and complain but I still love my FD.
