you can take it to www.sevenspeed.com that would probably be your best bet generally mazda dealers break more than they fix on rx7's........

The compression test will cost you around $45. Make sure to get the car warmed up before getting a compression test. It only takes a few minutes to do a compression test. Also, make sure to tell them that you want the results from the compression from the machine.

I believe most FD motors have overheating issues. That is why they need to be rebuilt so soon. If you maintain the car and dont do anything stupid, they wont fail. It's definately user error. Detonation on the other hand is purely the tuners fault. All these nice stand-alone systems will definately help, as long as you know what you are doing.

Some of the blame seems to be aimed at ECUs like PFS PMC, PFC etc.
Dude, I'm sorry but if you don't know the answer to this question yet, then you should proceed carefully with your performance upgrades. Dave at KD is a good start.

But there's no short answer to a question like that. I've also seen my fair share of Supra's who have wrecked their motors, as well as Talons, etc..albeit the rotary can be more sensitive to detonation.

To make a long story short...2 things:
1. Spend the time and money to DYNO TUNE with a WIDE LAMBDA O2.
2. Make sure your cooling system is running well.

And that's about it. Most people who lost their engines, did so, because they were either running too lean (detonation), or overheating.

Good luck

Ask the guys with 70-100k on their motors what they did to increase longevity. The Rex is a "thinking man's sports car", because of its unique engine and needed attention to detail and proper maintenance. It's not a turn-the-key plug-and-play car like *cough* other 'sports' cars. Call it eccentric, call it wierd technology, call it a pain in the a$$, but there's nothing sweeter or addicting than a rotary perfectly balanced and tuned for driving.
O man I love your choice of words!

I look to Dave at KDR to handle the dyno tuning to prevent detonation. I'm hoping using Evans coolant along with methanol/water injection will help solve the overheating problem. I think that I live in MN will help also.

Thanx

Man I am in the same boat as you. I got a bunch of mods done and Kablaam. I have been reluctant to get a compression test yet because i am affraid of the results. (Actually been busy cause of work.) I went w/ 3" straight
through exhaust, Pettit unlimited ECU, And a greddy profec B. Had it tuned by a guy from Pettit @ 12 psi. Even got a new koyo radiator to help w/ cooling and An ACT clutch w/ lightened flywheel. I was running stock engine, turbos and intercooler. Had work done w/ 57000 on the motor and now at 60000 when boom..It was a cool evening and did not see any spiking or overboosting when detonation occurred. Happened at WOT when second turbo came on. Don't know extent of damage (turbos,etc.). I can even get the car fired right now to get it for a comp. test. Probably have it towed.....G

What does everybody think would be the limit of mods before getting an ECU?

There are a list of reliability mods on my site. Go to the URL below, and then see the FAQ.
