Forget all the compliments we all got. While I was just crusing one guy pulled up to me. I was like what the F***, but he yell over at me if he can take a picture with his cell phone. I was like sure. He was telling me all the compliments I herd before. I felt sorry for him because I have what he didn't have, his dream car.

I fell in love when it first came out. I told myself this is the dream car. Own a 93 since 98 and I don't think i would ever get rid of it. I own an M3 and it's nowhere near an FD. Whenever I have a bad day getting into her just makes my problem goes away. LOVE IT, LOVE IT.

I would agree with everything everyone else has said.

But i would also add that the FD has a certain power. It humbles it's driver. Everyone here loves their car to death, and knows it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. But i've yet to read a single post bosting superiority. Or talkin in condasendance about other rides. (It's funny actually, the only person talking like a douche in here was the one guy who isn't an FD fan).
Everytime someone comes up to you and tells you how amazing it is, you jsut smile.
And also, due to the nature of the car, the FD doesn't let those who arn't worthy keep them. Anyone can buy an FD, but to own one takes something special. What I mean is that you need to care and respect the fd or it won't let you drive it. I once knew a highschool kid who bought an FD without knowing anything. Sure he loved the FD, a go fast chick magnet. But sure enough, he crashed it twice, drove it without respect, and had engine issues he didn't attempt to resolve. This was all within 2 weeks. The car got repo-ed and he has no intentions of ever getting another. Never once did he mention he didn't liek the car, infact even after losing it he expressed his love. But if you can't handle it, the FD won't let u keep it.

I never heard such expressions in words by any of Supra, Skyline and any other Japanese super machine owner. Never!

its becoming a Religion that in practicality is based on Love and spreading it, lol. wow!

If people at Mazda are reading this, they should be really proud of wht they have produced. They should start giving a free brand new block to every member who loves his ride. :p lol

The only one I saw for 6 years was mine with a for sale sign in the window before my friend bought it, thrashed it, and sold it at one hell of a loss to me. I love the lines, the powerband (even in stock form), and even though I haven't been able to drive mine for a couple years, I'll never sell it. I will revive her again soon and continue to terrorize the streets with her.

Cars like this come along only once every few decades...seriously. The Jaguar E-Type comes to mind, as far a bang for buck, sheer performance, and timeless styling.

I had an 86 and a 90 RX-7 and loved the way they looked and handled. In 1993 I walked into the local Mazda dealer in Cincinnati and saw the new 93 RX-7 in dark blue. I was just amazed at how awsome this car looked. I sat in the car and listen to the radio for about 30 minutes until the salesman came over and ask me if I was interested. I said yes and within a few minutes this guy saw I could not afford the car. He finally said You have to leave now. I was in my mid 30s. Now I am 51 and 2 years ago I found a 95 with 6500 miles for 27K. It looks and drives like a brand new car. I have always owned sports cars and this is the best looking, handling, and quickest car I have driven. It gets more attention on the road than any car I've ever owned. I will never get rid of this car. It now has 10.8K on it. I took the car to that same Mazda dealer in Cincinnati and the salesmen had never seen an FD. I couldn't believe it. That's how rare this car is.

Sometimes i think that FD's design was inspired by this car



whats common?
driver cabin position, and pushed inside from the doors
fenders flared above the tires
hood gradually dropping to front center duct
overall two seater

if someone here is good at 3D software of whateva kind, they can transform 300SL into a FD very easily.

after 15 years, you'd think someone would have produced another light (less than 2800 pound) true sports car with > 300 hp, but it hasn't happened...the Evo is as close as anyone has gotten I suppose, and I hate the looks of that car

what's interesting is about the same time, the Honda CBR900, Kawasaki Ninja, Yamaha FZR1000, and Suzuki GSXR1100 spawned a whole new era of light sport bikes, which is still thriving...you'd think the auto manufactuers would have gotten a clue, but they are too conservative

Most cars that the general populous calls a "sports" car are completely NOT sports cars. Integra, Civic Si, Tiburon, fwd crap. You get the point.

The FD was designed in an era of true sports cars. A gentleman's agreement for horsepower, handling characteristics, strong straight line, elegant styling (among multiple manufactures of the time), and a complete dominance of the numbers game is what makes a 3rd generation RX7 a true sports car. The future development of a purebred sports car, a vehicle with the sole intent of dominating the field, looks bleak. The 3rd generation RX7 was made in a day of limited environmentalist impact, low gas prices, and high testosterone levels. Born out of competition within guidelines. Created from ingenuity. Driven into history.

As I am one of the older members - age 60 -- I was familiar with rotary engines since the late 70's. So when the FD came out it had the style & hp that would last. I have owned my 93 R1 for only 3 yrs & it was a salvage repo. So I am making a DE car out of it. Single turbo, etc. As for style it is almost as good looking as my 63 XKE Coupe that I have owned for 38 yrs. Of course the FD kicks the E type's butt when it comes to horsepower. I feel very fortunate to own both.

And I love that when people ask what kind of car it is, and I tell them casually that its a mazda.... thats the que for "what?!?! A mazda??? I though that was like a porche or something!!" of course its pretty cool that my car will smoke any porche in town too lol

All around performance and looks there is no better car bang for teh buck wise. The only car that comes close is the c5 corvette since they can be had for about $15-17k these days in a 6 speed. The rx7 has a timeless design and mazda left a whole lot on the table when it comes to performance gains on this car. Not many cars can add over 100rwhp for less than $1k in mods without the use of nitrous. Simply beautiful and a unique experience you wont get inside of another sports car that is priced anywhere near the fd.

I think I just teared up some :P but seriously I consider myself lucky to own a Rx let alone an FD. It's so rewarding to educate people who are willing sit down and listen to you explain just how everything works. To watch there eyes light up or widen when you explain this or that etc etc. Even taking someone for a ride is awesome. I really enjoy doing that because it makes me feel accomplished about what I've been through just to get mine right and I can share it with others.

A lot of my friends have referenced my FD as "The Poor Man's Porsche" but honestly, I'm not really getting the connection. I know how the older RX-7's prime comparison was to varied Porsche models and whatnot.

But really, I know many Porsche owners and most simply own their car. Meanwhile, many of the individuals I've met through this site seem to live through their car, and the car lives through them. It's pretty symbiotic, the bond that is developed on this particular machine. Meanwhile, I've always seen most Porsche owners as parasitic. They use the car but not much outside of that. Granted, that's stereotyping a particular niche which is an action I usually don't succumb to, but hey ~ it helps to reinforce my point so I'll go with it.

I've been part of many car clubs that are specific to a make or model. But the RX-7's seem to draw a crowd of people that are more of a family than a collective of people with similar taste. RX-7 owners are willing to go far out of their way to assist another with any assorted problem. Even if it has nothing to do with the car.

I don't think the people made it that way. I think somehow the car made it that way. In terms of giving us some form of common ground to associate each other with.

The fact that it's such a rare car compared to most other production models probably helps greatly.

I can't really explain it I suppose. I own an FD and I like the feeling I get from it. It's not really a status symbol or a means to an end for me. It's like an unspoken string that links me to all the other owners.

I never got that feeling from my 2G Eclipse, 3G Eclipse, or any of my GC8 Impreza's. Never got that feeling from my Legacy or my Levin.

I honestly figured my ownership of the FD would be similar to my previous vehicles. The fact it's turned out the way it has is rather staggering to me. But hey, I look forward to the duration of the time that I have her under my tenure.

I agree, I think too many people today confuse a sport compact with a sports car. People need to learn the difference, it's pretty obvious IMO.

even the cops love it

while driving to rick's rotary today, i had a friend that was following me. we drove by a cop on a motorcycle and my friend said the cop was eyeing my every move. it didn't help that my car is red. luckily for me, i knew we were near a police station so i was within the speed limit.
