Why ecu need do know if we have neutral,1 gear or 2?

My car have problem with emission harness on x-06 connector , the air pump and fuel temp sensor didnt work.
Yesterday i decide to fix this problems so I read the wiring schematics and I found that the neutral ,1,2 gear switch it is also connected to this connector and also it have problem too.
I fix it and now work except the neutral switch who have 100ohm resistance.
My question is why ecu needs this info?
I dont see any difference after the repair.
