I was wondering why our car needs engine rebuilds all the time. I just had my rebuild at 100000k and i have now put 38000 clicks on the new motor. Well i have to rebuild it again??? even if i do all the proper maintenance etc??? how long can i expect this motor to last??? I just dont understand why the rotary has to be rebuilt periodically. And by the way how long does it take to get the engine rebuilt and put back in the car??

 

Maybe you should do some web data collection on other makes or very high performance engines that make comparable power per displacement and that are supercharged/turbocharged.

 

Go get a compression test. If you do all the proper maintenance (IE, changing the oil every 2000 miles, warming up the engine correctly, etc.), you shouldn't have a problem. I'm not sure about the rebuild times.

 

Usually due to overheating or detonation which will cause the apex seals to be warped or damaged. Thus, needing to replace them and hopefully nothing else (unless the rotors were damaged as well).

The longevity of the motor really depends on you. As stated before, proper maintanance. If there is a problem with the car, don't keep driving it until you fix it, etc..

No one is a fortune teller and can tell you exactly when you will need a rebuild. I purchased my FD with 44k miles on it. Unfortunately, the coolant seals were already done (and it took 3 Mazda dealers months to tell me what was going on with the car) so I got a remanufactured engine put in around 52k.

I have yet to put 20k on the new engine in the 2 and 1/2 years it's been in the car, but I don't look forward to the day I need a rebuild. I would suggest that if it's a problem, you get rid of the car while it's in good shape.

I would imagine that a shop could do the work in about a week or two depending if they can work on the car steady the entire time and they have all the parts they will need already there. Most cars are usually off the road for at least a month for a rebuild. It took Mazda 4 months to get a remanufactured engine shipped and installed for me. Knowing what I know now, I would never do that again.
