Why Cant I Shift About 4500rpm Like Most Shift After 6000 Rpm

HEY ALL well my ? is i have never tried to shift at 5000 to 6000 rpm, in 4th and 5th i shift around 4000, but would i loose power after that, i hear most guys do it way after 5000, is it becuase they have a flywheel or some other mods, i know that if i stay on it after 1st and 2nd to long i loose power i lost to a slk amg for being in 1st to long, i guess my ? is how do i prevent that, will it be ok to shift pass 5500 and up with just stock tranny

sounds like your second turbo isn't coming on. Check the rats nest for torn hoses

Nope, let him blow it up. He already got good advice, if he doesn't want to listen don't save him from himself.

You just don't get it do you?

You stupid post(s) misleads people. You come in here asking for advice to help trouble shoot your car but you have an erroneous mod list. WTF is that? What you think a T-78 FD is going to have the same power issues as one with twins? Give a correct mod list if you want people to help you sort out problems... Is that too much to ask? sheesh.

MODS:

ARC - SUPER COLD BOX
ARC - RACE SMIC
APEXI GT / CAT
APEXI TURBO TIMER
APEXI PFC
BLITZ - TEMP/BOOST
BLITZ - SBC / POWER METER
MAZDACOMP - RADIATOR
MAZDASPEED - SHORT SHIFT
TRIPOINT - AST
TRIPOINT - MIDPIPE
HAWK - HPS- BREAKS
HKS - SS BOV
GREDDY - T-78
GREDDY - 3 PEICE PIPEING
GREDDY - RACE PULLEYS
GAB - STRUT TOWER BAR

Oh my God! re-read my post! It's not about owning an T-78. It's about an issue that you have (loss of power at high RPMS) and you mislead people with your mod list. Now diagnosing a T-78 problem is a whole different animal than a twins problem & that's why I'm bitching at you.

I reread the first post again and still can't figure out the question. What exactly is the question? "My car doesn't seem to make much power after 5K so can I shift before I get there?" or "At what shift point do you guys shift at in any gear?"

I'm up in the 7500 to 8K range when I shift, if I was getting on it hard or at the track. If your car isn't pulling hard after 5K, what is your boost gauge displaying as far as boost pattern? 10-8-10 is normal, what's yours?

You shouldn't have the T-78 in your mod-list. Reason - you haven't made the mod yet. Simply owning it doesnt count. It only serves to confuse people on the forum. Remember, these people give advice to you on THEIR terms not yours. If they say it would be easier to help you if your mod-list was accurate, and you leave it as is, don't expect good advice (if any)

When you ask for help, others on the forum don't want to have to ask you what mods you actually have "on the car"

Start asking questions in a manner that normal people can understand them and you will be surprised you will get good feedback.

we'll if i'm understanding you. yes you'll have 10psi of boost untill you let your foot off. your stock BOV will then let that 10psi out. so if you hold rpm till anypoint and then shift the boost is let out and now the turbo has to re-spool to hit 10psi in the next gear. Am i anwsering your question b/c i'm still wondering what your trying to ask for.?

i think what he's asking is "what is the best shift point?" and to answer that the general concensus is 7200 stock or near stock, and (i've heard) the HP curve moves higher up the RPM's with more mods so i'd suggest 7500 as a shift point, shifting at 8000 or after 8000 is risky, as the apex seals begin to pull in from the hourglass shaping of the rotor housing, this could cause a whole new set of problems. i hope this helped

Ok, I've been reading this thread and still have not understand something. 7bound, why the hell you want to shift at 5k rpm? A healthy FD will make it's power above 4.5-5k rpm (transition) up to 7200-7500 depending on your mods. Now i have some mods and my car is good till redline so i shift just before that. That's where you should be shifting. And still i do not understand why you want to shift at 5k. Unless your car has a problem with the second turbo.

Now you understand why I got so pissed about this in your other thread. When you post a thread asking a question, then you're obviously expecting some help from some more knowledgeable members. In order for us to do that, we need all the info that we can get, and that info has to be accurate. Otherwise, you're just wasting both our times.

Pertaining to your question in this thread (now that we know you're still on the twins): I think what you may be experienceing is a function of the turbo transition. The twins transition from primary to secondary around 4500 RPM. But they won't switch BACK to primary only until your RPMs dip below 3k. If you shift at 4500-5000, then your RPMs will fall to around 3k-3.5k. This is not low enough for the twins to switch back to primary only, so you'll still be in parallel mode. You'll have no power until your RPMs climb back up to a point suitable for both turbos (around 4k).

I suggest the following: obviously, if you're seriously romping on the car, then go ahead and wind it out to 7-8k (rather than shortshifting). But if you're just putting around town, shift prior to the turbo transition (4k RPM or under). This will ensure that you're still in primary mode after the shift.

-Rob

somewhat related question: A stock FD makes 255hp at what rpm? 6500 or so I'd guess.

This is probably the most F'd up post ever, but i guess i better throw some words of wisdome in there. First off 7 BOUND, depending on what type of SLK AMG you raced, your list of mods would not beat it even if you shifted perfectly. Second, there are plenty of post that give very good explenations for when to shift gear to gear.Third, you need to go get a full diagnostics test run on your car, if it is a problem with you secondary turbo, i sugjest that you start installing that t78. Fourth, you must be a newbie to cars in genral to think that a flywheel whould change a powerband that much.Last of all, it came off that you don't have a low mile engine, i might be mistaken, but if that is the case i recomend a rebuild and mabey a street port before you run the t78 to get the best response out of it. There its said and done.
