Will the 5 speed transmition hold up to that kind of horse power?
My friend has a Honda Civic (I know I know, just bare with me and read before you flame)
He is running around 490 -511 HP depending on fuel, he was going through transmitions like nothing, he had to have a custom one built @ the cost of $3800.00
The thing was that with the original transmition he could only get to 135 MPH, but hed get there in less than 13 seconds.
I wonder if the RX-8 Transmition might be a neat conversion, or is that out of the queston.
Any suggestions?

the stock 5 speed is good for 500+WHP but it will eat the occasional syncro from time to time if abused. rarely with they launch a bearing or a gear, just suncros..
to be honest, the diffs break more than the trannies do on high WHP RX7s.
the 8's 6 speed transmission can literally only hold 1/3 the power of the FC/FD turbo tranny before it breaks.
if there is one thing that was overbuilt for these cars it was the tranny, only a mis-shift into fifth from second or constant abuse can hurt these manual gearboxes.

I've stated before, the auto is just fine for street driving. if you keep it under 350 hp it will be plenty fast for the street. anyone with the auto should upgrade to 4.33 gears. it wakes up the trans putting more power to the wheels at low end. anyway enjoy the car its more than most people can handle even with the auto trans

I had read in the "how fast have you had your FD" thread that a guy had his FD going 168 while racing a Ferrari, do you think his car topped out because of lack of power, or because the FD's 5th gear is not long enough, because he said at thet speed the ferrari just started to walk away.
Has a custom 6 speed ever been put into a FD , allowing it to reach speed above 200 MPH?
I understand that at those speeds you would obveously need some serious aero-dynamics to help keep you on the ground.

2nd gear syncros are the next weakest link since it is the most abused gear change and after 80k miles and tens of thousands of 2nd gear shifts the syncros usually are worn and have little bite left so they can't slow the shaft down fast enough or at all anymore and wind up grinding going into second.

i think the person who told u that auto's were faster was referring to a "sport tuned" auto tranny. like the ones on supras and nsx's. and yes they are faster than the 6sp version.
