who uses the pfs purple box?

I'm looking into getting the newest version of the pfs purple box with the keypad and three position boost control. I feel that this is the best system for the price (around $500 used). I would like to get the Powef FC but at this time I can only afford the purple box. I would like to hear some opinions and feedback from those who use this system. I would also like to know what kind of performance #s your car made after installation and what problems you've had with it.

93 fd with hi-flo, dp, cb, ic, and possibly the pfs intake ( i can't figure out whether its the stock airbox or the pfs intake)

I run the system and I agree the price is right on used units. I chose mine mainly for local support over price as there is a shop fairly close to me with lots of experience with the system on turbo stangs and they have dyno facilities.

I use the purple box with M2 intake, Efini Y-pipe, DP, HF Cat, HKS hiper, and a Petit Cool ChargeII SMIC. I have had no problems with the unit so far. Tuned quite conservatively... I don't race. I would eventually like to go with a PFC, as it seems more people are learning to properly tune these, and less people are experienced with the PMS.

I have it, easy to tune.

I was putting down 301rwhp with pettit cold air intake, pulleys, dP and CB. (12psi-13psi)

i used one for about 2 years. it was the older gold unit.
easy to tune, and no real issues to speak of. best source of information on this unit is wade lanham. probably the most informed person on these units - and he is a forum member.
personally, if it was me - i would take the $500 you have, put it aside, and save $100 a month, and buy a used PFC with commander this summer.

for the 3K problem with the PMC unit , i sug. removing the PMC unit, and running the car with just the stock ECU for about a day. Then, plug the PMC back in, and this should have cleared everything out and eliminate the 3K deal. this has worked for several people, including myself.

you would be better off waiting and getting it done right.

ask anyone who knows better....go ask in the single turbo forum where the pros are..not one of those guys run the thing.

I bought Wade's unit ... the guy really knows his stuff. If you haven't checked out his website yet, do it.

The whole setup cost me $600 ... purple box, keypad, and software. I really like the fact that there are three programs. I've set it for 8/9PSI, 10/11PSI, 12/13PSI. My motor is out for repair now, but while I had the unit in a running car I enjoyed it. ... <grin> No, I didn't blow the motor with the box ... the water seal was blown when I bought the car.

I think that the two biggest factors in my buying it were: 1) half the cost of the PowerFC. 2) The tuning wasn't as intimidating. I was just adding and removing from the stock settings.

Now, having said all of this ... If you intend to go radical with the car ... I.E. single turbo, full open exhaust, etc. I would just get the Power FC and get it over with. You'll be able to adjust fuel, timing, boost, cooling fan trigger points, oil metering pump, absolutely everything. The purple box stops after boost.

We all have to start somewhere right? Why not start simple??? and cheap??? Oh wait we probably shouldn't disgrace the 3rd gen RX-7 that way. Then I might pop my motor (which seems to have a limited life anyway).

nah, I'll just buy a single turbo and a haltech stand alone and got into it blind, that way my logic won't be so fuzzy.

But hell, what do I know???

I'm not trying to start anything here, but geeze some of us are just kids with a car that is too powerful for our own good. Since I've been reading this forum (a few months) at least 3 people have died and a number of FD's have been totalled. Should we just leave the whole freakin' car to the pro's too? For people who can afford it, this seems like a perfect car to learn on and build on...why would I say that, there are only like a bazillion custom jobs out there on FD's everywhere from S2K push buttons to lambo style doors to V8's to some of the ugliest cars I've ever seen, but hey they should have just waited and done it right...

I know this forum isn't the place to vent, I don't know why I even spoke up

hey..its your motor...do what you will...you can use old outdated and discontinued technology or you can do it right.

its not a matter of the "fd starter or beginners kit". there is no such thing. PERIOD.

it is cheap because it does not serve to accurately tune your vehicle. it "sort of" works...and thats it.

any system that has plug and play boost/tuning settings is inaccurate. do some research...you can not tune by mail. every seven has different issues and needs individual tuning.

anyone using that function that rikki mentioned without having their machine on a dyno is risking their investment under their hood.

go learn the hard way boys...its not about trying to be a pro...its about having a car that is tuned properly.


you car is only as good as the shittiest mod on your machine.


its up to you.

btw...rikki...it is really nothing agains pfs...they have done a great job with your car after all that trial and error.

if you worked for apexi and were on here pushing the n1 dual I would tell EVERYONE how it MELTS the hell out of our bumpers and sounds like junk. You on the other hand would probably still call me an ******* and explain how great the product is and the craftsmanship (it has beautiful welds..hahah). I understand...its your job.

regardless...the **** melts my bumper everytime I drive it. Im going pettit instead...the n1 dual works...but you pay the price if you use it.

I bought my Purple box used and have
had no problems. It even controls my
boost perfectly (warm weather).
With the stock sequentials, common bolt-ons, Nitto drag radials,
at 12psi. of boost, I turned a 12.69
beating a Z06.
I guess the question is how far
you intend to go with your mods.

The PFS purple is just dandy. Not if you plan to go single of course but the price is right and my times ain't too shabby for a street-legal car running a cat. I have had not a bit of trouble with it and because I drop down to basically stock boost by turning a switch, I get through clean air tests.

What's not to like? Three positions, stock, medium for the street and race fuel for the track, and my factory computer does all that other crap that the factory computer does.

rikki...your response bummed me out a bit...everything I said was true...Im not in here spouting off misinformation to hurt you. You question my knowledge of what I have learned and put up little smiley faces...tis the way of one who has no argument against proven facts based on personal experience.

i learned to tune the damn thing myself...rikki...i had problems dealing with the big name tuners and my problems were not related to the quality of my ecu. my problems stemmed from salesmens bullshit and incompetence the part of the companies they represented.

If I only had 5x5 (your box) resolution during my tuning Id definitely not be confident in the accuracy of the job I did. I would be scared to drive the thing as hard as I do.

ernie t pointed out that your IC and this POS purple box you sell is out of date. you dumped a big load on his head then too.

Anyone with any experience knows that you are getting paid to come in here and say what you do...and that you are simply protecting the products that put food on your table.

you tell these guys that they will make the same power with your purple gameboy and that just might be the case...you might get similar power...but you know as well as I do that your 5x5 resolution in boost is going to be entirely inaccurate. any arguing you do against this just shows the foolery of your statements.

inaccuracy in tuning can lead to detonation and apex seal failure. right?

PS...I am no authority on tuning. FD Racer and I tuned our cars ourselves after doing a LOT of research and seeing poor results from the big tuners. I know what I need to know to do the job. Simple as that. After being sold products like my n1 dual and my old gforce ecu and being sold tune by mail products like yours...I am simply FED UP.

I dont hate ya guy...you have been a great asset to the forums...I admire that....though your contributions since you took that job have somewhat decreased as you now are simply a salesman.
