Who can name this oil plug?
Hi everyone,
I warmed up the engine a bit tonight, installed and set a new dash pot, shut down the engine and then pulled the oil drain. I plan on pulling the oil pan on Saturday so the oil will be dripping until then.
Anyway ... here's my oil plug. What is this / does it do / is it used for?

The rubber plug is just a sort of dust cap. The opening doesn't go through.
The engine end isn't magnetic. It looks like a thermostat of some sort.
Maybe someone makes a temperature sender that twist locks into the other end?
Maybe the last owner needed a new drain plug and re-purposed a convenient part?

That is a drain quick coupler. There is a male end with hose barbs on it to interface. The twist lock depresses the ball seal and allows the oil to flow out. Looks to be a bit of a cheesy one that will take forever to drain the oil.
Aeroquip makes probably the best one available:

Here is an Aircraft certified one:

I use these on my boat. On a street car they are a bit vunerable however.

I've used these on all of my cars for years.

Much better pricing!
Assuming that it doesn't have clearance (would be sheared off going up a driveway), here's the one for our car.

Unfortuniately the IHBA is looking closely at these devices and right now it looks as if only the Aeroquip and Chief will be able to be used in comming seasons. So I use them. Still I wouldn't use them on a car unless the bung was inaccessable or draining oil was going to spill all over the car.
