Question White smoke comes out exhaust when 2nd turbo spools in 1st gear.

yea, when my second turbo spools a cloud of white smoke comes out in 1st gear, sometimes in 2nd gear too, but not all the time.

What is causing this?
How can I fix this?

Sounds like your turbos are blowing oil. This happens when the seals start to wear out inside the turbos.

Oil starts blowing through the seal under pressure (boost)...and it means time for a rebuilt set of turbos, or replace them with a new or used set.

You're really winding it out to get 2nd turbo in first gear, man.

yes, my turbos are leaking oil and I think you are right.

My second turbo comes in at 6000 in 1st, 5500 in 2nd, and 4500 in 3rd, 4th, and 5th

My mechanic says there isnt anything that I can do to fix these leaky turbos except replace or rebuild, is this true? Why?

What do you mean by winding it out?

I think what he means about winding it out is that you drive hard, but hey thats what the car is for right?

So is there any option besides replace or rebuild?

Sure, drive with it like that.

You will use more oil, blow oil out the tailpipe under acceleration, and probably start leaking oil externally out of the turbos...which will end up on your driveway.

Eventually, the turbo seals will totally fail, and you will have a 007 smoke cloud a quarter mile long! And...your turobs won't boost any more.

You can either rebuild the twins, replace with used or new...or go single.

Later,
Patrick

Light blue smoke is oil, white smoke is water. Does it smoke just after start up or all the time?

yea, it will smoke at start up (white) and when 2nd turbo spools in 1st gear. The turbos are externally leaking already and I just put a cardboard box in the garage so its ok.

If you are getting oil in the exhaust from the turbos there realy is nothing to do but rebuild. If you can do the removal of the turbos yourself you can get rebuilt cartridges from Turbo City. They cost about $500 per turbo and they will give you some $ for your old turbos. That beats the hell out of $1700.0 from other rebuilders. Dont worry about the...(our turbus flow 20% more air then stock) internet hysteria. You will have to take the old turbos off the manafold and install the new ones yourself......not that hard but you will need to put them back in the correct place.
