White goop on oil filler cap should i worry?

Checking the oil yesterday,I saw a little white goop on the filler cap,I dont recall seeing it there before,is this a a leak of some sort? I do get a wiff of coolant when I shut the engine off.

Getting 20 1bs of vacum at idle, car runs fine, what would be the first things to check for? thanks,C.

Normal condensation on many cars. Don't worry about it.

I've found that it varies in my car depending on the type/brand of oil I use... if you smell it you'll be able to tell that it's not coolant. It's probably just moisture or something else emulsified in the oil

my experience with different oils (10-12 oil changes):

Valvoline regular 10W30 = no goo (consistently)

Mobil 1 full synth 10W30 = goo
Valvoline full sunth 10W30 = goo
Castrol GTX regular 10W30 = goo

my engine has 94K and wasn't quite as tightly sealed as I would've liked when I tried my synthetic testing, leaked like crazy, so I swithed back to regular Valvoline

even though that goo is normal, something about it bothers me

I've got the goo as well (mobil 1 15w-50). Just wipe it off and add the "goo" to your "annoying traits of the FD list".

I used to get a fair amount of goo with Havoline oil. I switched to Royal Purple a year or two ago and there is absolutely no goo anymore.

To be safe check your coolant level, because if you have a dodgy water seal, you can get the same thing also. check see if there is any oil in the coolant aswell, howmuch miles do you have on your engine, the fact that you smell coolant also does not sound too comforting. If in doubt play it safe and get it checked by your mechanic better safe than sorry.

regards

Brian

I use havoline in my car and have never gotten any goo. I don't think the goo is related to the type of oil. I think there is more to it than that. That's just my opinion though.

Yeah, I did eventually lose a coolant seal, so it could have been some coolant in the oil. The goo problem is fairly common and it seems logical that it would be related to oil degradation, though.

Hi Carl I live in south London in a town called croydon.
Did you take your car with you or did you buy one over there ?? Hopefully it's nothing though with your car.
What oil do you use?? Most of the guy's from the rx7 member club i'm with including myself tend to use ]
10w 30 mineral oil. What do you do for petrol, do you use octane booster??? i thought the octane of fuel in U.S.A was quite low. The highest we use here is shell optimax 98 octane. Saying that i guess it don't make much difference after 60-70k or so we all need a rebuild at the end of the day.

Regards

Brian

Brian, yes I know Croydon to go out and sutch,I went to school in Brighton,so would if we ever went out we would go" up town "quite a lot.

Bought the rexy "over here" and the highest octane is 94! even less in the west coast eek!

Were starting to the cool cars, the WRX is doing well and the 280Z is also selling well so hopefully we will get all of the new models here someday, Carl.
