when to upgrade ECU

OK guys...ive read and read on people saying that one of the first mods I should do is upgrade the ecu...or that it should be on the top of the list. Well What should i really do? Ive searched on this and havent found a for sure answer...i mean people are all saying different things. Im planning on gettin a Turbo back exhaust soon.....would it be ok to run the car with that and not an ecu upgrade? I dont want to F*** anything up because i just bought the car like 2 weeks ago and dont have money for repairs. If i sound like i dont know what im talking about maybe i read the other threads wrong and im a moron...just ignore me if that's the case. Thanks everyone

General rule of thumb is two mods, like some combination of Intake, Downpipe and Catback. Don't do a Midpipe until you have an ECU.
